September Stand Down to assist Delaware veterans to achieve independence and self-sufficiency
The Annual Delaware Veterans Stand Down will return Friday, September 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dover’s Schutte Park.
The event, first begun in 2009 was cancelled for the last two years because of the pandemic is full on for this year, according to organizers Liz Byers-Jiron of the Delaware Veterans’ Awareness Center Foundation at 12385 Sussex Highway Greenwood, DE.
A Veterans Stand Down is a one-day outreach event for all veterans and their guests. It is organized, planned, and carried out by a volunteer committee that plans year-round. Agencies and local service providers across the state offer critically needed assistance in one convenient location. Services include housing, medical, dental, flu shots, behavioral health, VA eligibility assessment and benefits, in addition to haircuts, legal service, hot food, warm clothing, employment readiness assistance, and camaraderie.
“The 2019 event featured 150 organizations that assisted 1,500 veterans, and we look forward to a good turnout this year. We rely on financial support and in-kind donations from the community," said Mr. Byers-Jiron. "We are also looking for a volunteer photographer, golf cart drivers, transportation truck, tables and chairs along with a wish list of items for our veterans."
All donations are tax-deductible, and checks should be made payable to ‘Delaware Veterans Stand Down, 12385 Sussex Highway, Greenwood, DE 19950.
Contact Annette Fletcher at 302-577-5050, or Liz Byers-Jiron at [email protected] to request information on how to help with services or contributions.
