Happy Birthday, Martha Washington!

Happy Birthday to Martha Washington!

June 2, 1731, Martha Washington was born in New Kent County, Virginia, British America.

Long before the United States was officially a nation, Martha Washington was serving the cause of freedom and independence. While General George Washington led the Continental Army, Martha traveled to military encampments with him, endured harsh conditions, comforted wounded soldiers, organized support efforts, and inspired women across the colonies to contribute to the war effort.

At Valley Forge and beyond, she provided encouragement, care, clothing, and supplies to troops facing extraordinary hardships. Her dedication earned her the affectionate nickname “Lady Washington.”

Today, on her birthday, we honor Martha Washington. Her courage, commitment, and service helped build our Nation.

From the SCDAR is this interesting history about women in our Colonial era:

During the Revolutionary War, many South Carolina women became far more than keepers of the home — they became managers of plantations, traders, suppliers, creditors, and vital supporters of the Patriot cause. 🇺🇸

While husbands served in the militia, fought in partisan campaigns, or were absent because of the war, women often stepped forward to keep farms and businesses operating. They sold cattle, managed crops, supplied provisions, extended credit, and negotiated directly with merchants and military officials.

Remarkably, South Carolina law had already recognized this reality decades earlier.

In 1744, the colonial legislature passed an Act allowing a married woman who operated independently as a “sole trader” to sue and be sued in matters of business “as if such woman was sole, and not under coverture.” This gave women practical legal authority to recover debts, conduct trade, and manage commercial affairs even while their husbands were absent.

The law reflected the economic realities of colonial South Carolina — and during the Revolution, those realities became essential to survival and resistance.

The contributions of these women helped sustain families, local economies, and in many cases the Patriot war effort itself.

The Issaqueena Chapter presented the DAR Gold ROTC Medal to Mykenzie Hart, who graduated from Lander University on Wednesday and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant today during the Army ROTC Commissioning Ceremony for the Highlander Batallion.

This battalion includes ROTC cadets from Lander University, Presbyterian College and Newberry College.

Mykenzie, who will be part of the field artillery unit of the South Carolina National Guard, is employed with the Anderson County Sheriff's Department. She is from Toney, Alabama.

The beautiful ceremony, which included remarks by Presbyterian College President Anita Olson Gustafson and Col. Hugh H. Coleman III, was held at PC.

This is the third consecutive year that our chapter has given this award. Last year's recipient, Juana Arce Jimenez, also was commissioned today. I felt so proud to be in the company of these outstanding young women who are committed to serving our nation.

So grateful for our teachers!

So grateful for our teachers!

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! Teachers are the keepers of our future, and the champions of the curious minds who will carry our nation's story forward. This week, we celebrate every educator who inspires a love of history, service, and community in their students.

DAR has long believed that education is one of the most powerful ways to honor our founding legacy. Through scholarships, essay contests, and American history education programs, DAR members across the country work hand in hand with teachers and students to strengthen and support education in classrooms every day.

To every teacher out there, thank you. What you do matters more than words can say.

The Mt. Ariel Chapter, NSDAR and the Greenwood County SC 250 Coalition held a dedication ceremony for a new historic marker for the town of Hodges.

Established around 1852, the town is named for George Washington Hodges, whose father John Hodges served in the American Revolution as a militia officer with Gen. Andrew Pickens.

As we share our America 250! story, these markers are an important reminder of our history.

Our gratitude is great for all who serve and those whose service has given us the freedoms we treasure today!
