As the Africa Water & Sanitation Systems Leadership Symposium comes to a close in Kigali, one message is clear: achieving lasting water and sanitation services requires strong systems, shared leadership, and collective action.

Over the past few days, Water For People has joined WASH leaders from across Africa to share experiences, challenge ideas, and contribute to important conversations on climate resilience, public financial management, decentralized services, market-based sanitation, effective regulation, results-based financing, and systems transformation.

From our speakers and panelists to the many conversations at our exhibition booth, we’ve been encouraged by the commitment across the sector to move from dialogue to action.

A big thank you to everyone who joined our sessions, stopped by our booth, exchanged ideas with our teams, and contributed to these important conversations.

The symposium may be ending, but the work continues. We leave Kigali energized by the connections made, lessons shared, and our collective ambition to build stronger WASH systems that deliver lasting services for everyone.

When health workers can't wash their hands, they cannot do their job right. Jeniva tells how unreliable water access affects the daily lives of patients and health providers alike at the Idodoma Health Center.

"It reached a point where even doctors lacked water to wash their hands, so we had to go collect it and carry it here," recalls Jeniva. "If we can get access to reliable water, it will help us provide services at the Health Center. It will also be a huge help to pregnant women who are giving birth."

Water For People's mission is clear: reaching everyone with safe water and sanitation, forever - including health clinics.

"We really need water because mothers who are giving birth depend on it" says Jeniva Kawago, a health provider at the Idodoma Health Center in Tanzania.

Clean water isn't charity. It's a human right. Safe water, sanitation, and hygiene are essential at nearly every point in our lives. In health clinics, they make it possible to clean equipment, prevent infections, support safe childbirth, and provide patients with the care and dignity they deserve.

When these basics are out of reach, preventable diseases spread more easily. Health workers face greater challenges and risks providing safe care. At Water For People, we aim to reach every health clinic with safe water and sanitation forever, so communities can live healthy lives and thrive.

“When the water runs out, it becomes a challenge,” says Dr. Alexander Magasha of Mkanana Village, located in the Mpwapwa District in Tanzania.

Reliable access to water and proper toilet use could help prevent illnesses such as diarrhea, vomiting, and parasitic infections. More often than not, Dr. Magasha sees patients returning to health facilities two or three times a month with the same diarrheal diseases, adding to the financial burden on families and increasing the need for medicines.

Access to safe water and sanitation can help prevent illness even before treatment is needed, protecting people's health, reducing avoidable healthcare costs, and helping communities thrive

Safe water prevents outbreaks of disease. When safe water isn't available, the health of entire communities is at risk. Clean water isn't charity. It's a human right, and we're on a mission to reach everyone with clean water that lasts forever.

Water For People’s activities include protecting water sources, safely managing human waste, reaching hospitals and clinics with reliable water and sanitation access, and providing hygiene training in schools and communities – all contributing to saving lives.

Every day, Miguel works alongside communities and local leaders to strengthen water security. Throughout his career, he's witnessed a meaningful shift in the conversations taking place.

"There has been an evolution in dialogue around water issues. The focus has gone from the ability to use and distribute water resources to issues related to climate resilience."

As environmental challenges intensify, protecting water means building stronger, more resilient communities and water systems, because water sustains our planet.

This river is more than water; it is the steady heartbeat of this land.

The Mpanga Water Fund aims to secure the Mpanga Watershed in Uganda by investing in nature. Spearheaded by Water For People, in partnership with the Ministry of Water and Environment and supported by The Nature Conservancy, this initiative reflects shared responsibility and stewardship.
