This year, Joe Kelly is the tenth recipient of the Sentinel Award, an honor recognizing community members who lead by lifting others while remaining grounded in humility, kindness, and service. Kelly, whose resume reads like five lifetimes compressed into one, is a fitting honoree as the award reaches its tenth year.

“People think they have to fight. But if you bring everyone together, your productivity becomes exponentially greater,” he said. “You don’t have to worry about getting stepped on or embarrassed. You can just roll up your sleeves and get to work.”

FATHER RICHARD MURPHY NAMED THE 2025 GREENWICH ST. PATRICK’S PARADE 49th GRAND MARSHAL

The Greenwich Hibernian Society announces Father Richard Murphy, Associate Pastor at Saint Michael the Archangel Parish, as the Grand Marshal of the 49th annual Greenwich St. Patrick’s Parade. The installation will take place on Saturday, March 8, at the organization’s annual St. Patrick’s dinner dance, to be held at the Knights of Columbus Society. The annual Parade will be held on Sunday, March 23, at 2 p.m.

Father Murphy was born and raised in Stamford, CT., attended elementary school at St. Mary Stamford, Burdick Middle School, and Stamford High School, graduating in 1979. Following graduation, Murphy worked for Pitney Bows Corporation. In 1989, Murphy entered the St. John Fischer seminary to begin his residence and continue his education, earning a bachelor’s degree at Sacred Heart University. then started his seminary education at the Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall.

Murphy’s paternal grandfather, Philip Murphy, Sr., immigrated from County Wexford, and his paternal grandmother, Margaret Carey, immigrated from County Kilkenny. Murphy’s grandparents met in Brooklyn where they married and later moved to Greenwich, CT. Murphy’s parents, Philip Murphy, Jr., and Betty (Rossillo) Murphy had five children: Richard, Philip III, Elizabeth, Rosemary, and Margaret.

Murphy was ordained a priest in 1996 at St. Augustine Cathedral in Bridgeport, CT., by Bishop Edward Egan. Murphy’s first assignment was at St. Thomas the Apostle in Norwalk, followed by St. Cecilia in Stamford, and then he became Pastor at St. Theresa in Trumbull and at Our Lady of Peace in Stratford. In 2014, Murphy was reassigned to serve as Associate Pastor at Saint Michael the Archangel Parish in Greenwich, where he continues to serve today. His pastoral work is defined by his unwavering care for others, his commitment to administering the sacraments, and his tireless visits to the sick and elderly.

Murphy has held the position of chaplain of the Trumbull Police Department, the Greenwich Police Department, the Greenwich Fire Department, and the Greenwich Knights of Columbus. “Father Richard Murphy’s deep-rooted ties to the community, his service as a police chaplain, his leadership within the Knights of Columbus, and his humble yet profound dedication to the people of Greenwich make him an exemplary representative of our Town's values,” says Greenwich Police Chief Jim Heavey, 38th Grand Marshal.

Murphy considers it a great honor to be the 49th Grand Marshal of the Greenwich Hibernian's St. Patrick's Parade and has many fond memories of attending the parade as a child and just how important this event was for his Godfather and uncle, Dennis Murphy. Murphy is proud to serve the community of Greenwich and is delighted to serve this role in an event that celebrates one of the great Saints of Ireland, a land and culture he came to know and love through his father's family and witnessed their pride in their country while visiting the homeland.
