Spanning 40 beautiful acres, Lapham Preserve is a stunning mosaic of rolling hills, forests, meadows, ponds, wetlands, and streams — the majority of which was generously donated to Greenwich Land Trust by Lewis Lapham over several decades. 🌿
Every season at Lapham brings something extraordinary.
In winter, blazing red winterberry hollies bordering the pond brighten the landscape along John Street while providing vital food and shelter for migrating and overwintering birds. In spring, the preserve comes alive with the chorus of amphibians calling from vernal pools, wetlands, and forested streams. 🐸
Summer transforms the upland meadows into a sea of native grasses and wildflowers buzzing with pollinators. These grasses and seed heads are intentionally left standing through winter to provide food, cover, and overwintering habitat for birds, bees, and butterflies. 🦋
Towering sugar maples, black cherry, and tulip poplar trees create immersive forests where screech owls can often be heard calling after dark. Thanks to the generosity of donors, GLT stewardship staff continue improving habitat throughout the preserve through Audubon Connecticut’s Forest Bird Habitat Assessment program.
Lapham Preserve is a beautiful reminder that protected open space supports wildlife in every season — and forever enriches our community. 💚
