Through the efforts of RW Brother Andrew Melillo, and hosted by Acacia Lodge No. 85 in partnership with the Greenwich Library, this extraordinary exhibit offers a unique opportunity to view one of America’s most significant historical artifacts.

This remarkable Bible was used during George Washington’s first presidential inauguration in 1789 and remains a powerful symbol of American history.

If you’re nearby, we highly recommend stopping by to experience this incredible piece of our nation’s past. History truly comes alive when you see it in person.

From his Obituaty in the New York Times in 1996:

GREENWICH, Conn., Nov. 27 — Charles W. Pettengill Sr., a senior partner in the law firm here of Hirschberg, Pettengill, Strong & Nagle, died last night at Greenwich Hospital. He was 73 years old and lived at 156 Overlook Drive here.

Mr. Pettengill served as president of Rotary International in 1964 and in 1965.

He was a past president of the Greenwich and Connecticut Bar Associations and was chairman of the National Conference of Bar Presidents in 1950.

Mr. Pettengill graduated in 1922 from the Boston University School of Law. In 1965, Boston University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. And in 1972 he was one of the three alumni of Boston to receive its centennial award.

He had been a member of the Governor's Committee to study Connecticut probate courts, chairman of the Connecticut Citizens for Better Courts and a member of the State Parole Board.

Mr. Pettengill was a fellow of the American Bar Association Foundation and later its vice chairman. He. was also president of the Connecticut Bar Association Foundation.

He leaves his wife, the former Madeline S. Webster; a son, by his first marriage, Charles W. Pettengill Jr., and two stepsons, R. Kenneth Webster and Donald A. Webster.
