Neighbor to Neighbor

Neighbor to Neighbor Clients are referred by Greenwich Department of Social Services and local social service agencies, schools and religious institutions.

Neighbor to Neighbor strengthens the Greenwich community by providing access to nutritious food, clothing, and other essentials in an atmosphere of kindness and respect. We provide free weekly food to over 1,100 Greenwich residents and free clothing and household items to 2,600 residents of Greenwich, Stamford and Port Chester (NY). Donations of food, clothing, household items and funds are always welcome. We receive no government funding and rely solely on private donations to run our programs.

For Feature Friday this week, we’re excited to spotlight the amazing Albert Calixto, our Food Pantry Driver & Support!

Albert truly does it all – from pickups and drop-offs to assisting clients in our Essentials Room and running our special programs, Albert is always there with a smile, ready to help. Thank you, Albert, for all you do! 💚

🌟 Where are you from originally?
I am from “Money Earnin’ Mount Vernon.” (As a native Mount Vernoner, 28 years born and raised, I have never once heard anyone call it that, but yes, the little city in Westchester!)

🌟 How long have you worked for Neighbor & what do you do?
I have worked for Neighbor for about 5 years. Over the years, my tasks have changed; at first, I accompanied Elvis on pickups, worked on home deliveries, and shadowed Jane with her receptionist duties. Now I’m a driver and oversee essentials and special programs, but I jump in wherever I’m needed!

🌟 Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Neighbor?
Between the clients, kids, and pickup stops, it’s always an interesting experience! Honestly, just seeing the people who come and go. Some clients eventually stop needing Neighbor, and the small talk just becomes a memory.

🌟 What’s your favorite dish to cook? (Or favorite dish to eat?)
My favorite lazy dish to make is a “pizza sandwich,” which is just a roll of bread,
mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni. I promise it is *chef's kiss*! I also like eating and making ramen, cheeseburgers, lasagna, chicken parm pasta & sandwiches, tacos, pho, and mole chicken with rice. The list goes on!

September is Hunger Action Month, and here in Greenwich, the need is real. Rising food and gas prices, plus cuts to SNAP eligibility, have pushed our client numbers up 13% over last year. And more than 11,000 Fairfield County families are at risk of losing some or all of their SNAP benefits, which will have a ripple effect on food pantries in our area.

For Feature Friday this week, we’re excited to spotlight our fabulous Administrative Coordinator, Jean Davis-French!

Jean is one of our longest-serving staffers and handles everything from payroll to planning our annual holiday party. Thank you, Jean; we truly couldn’t do it without you! 💚

🌟 Where are you from originally?
Port Chester, New York, which is just around the corner from Neighbor.

🌟 How long have you worked for Neighbor & what do you do?
I’ve worked for Neighbor for almost 14 years. I pay the bills, process donations, manage payroll, and onboard new hires, among other tasks. I also arrange the Holiday Party and purchase items for the holiday bags for our clients' children every year.

🌟 Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Neighbor?
Every day is a favorite memory/fun experience. I work with wonderful people, and most of the clients are extremely nice and appreciative of what Neighbor does. Who could ask for more?

🌟 What’s your favorite dish to cook? (Or favorite dish to eat?)
I don’t use my kitchen anymore. I love chateaubriand, Aglio e Olio, and, of course, ice cream!

🌟For Feature Friday this week, we’re excited to spotlight one of our amazing volunteers, Sally Maloney!

🥕Tell us about yourself! What do you do for fun?

I’m a mom of 3 teenage daughters. I work at Greenwich Academy and coach field hockey there. For fun, I love going for walks, hanging out with my friends, and playing with my dog.

🥕What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

I like meeting the clients we serve and hearing their stories. I’ve also really enjoyed getting to know all the various volunteers. So many different kinds of people, all there to help.

🥕Do you have a favorite memory from volunteering or a fun day at Neighbor to Neighbor?

One day recently we were low on volunteers and slammed with clients. We didn’t stop moving for one second, but everyone worked really well together. Elvis always keeps it fun DJing in the back room!

Flashback to last year in our community garden on Parsonage Road!

Our gardens have been flourishing over the past year thanks to the dedication of our adult volunteers, student interns, and Student Volunteer & Garden Operations Coordinator, Jason. We’ve harvested over 300 pounds of fresh produce so far this year, all of which goes directly to our pantry clients, with much more to come.

800 backpacks, packed with love. 🎒

A huge thanks to the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation for the generous donation that made this possible, and to the amazing volunteer crew at Point72 Careers who helped pack the bags. From now through September, our incredible partners, including Barbara's House, formerly CCI, Jewish Family Services of Greenwich, Greenwich YMCA, and YWCA Greenwich, will help us get supplies straight into students' hands.

In late July, our Executive Director, K. Brent Hill, joined two fellow Greenwich nonprofit leaders, Mary Lee A. Kiernan, President & CEO of YWCA Greenwich, and Rachel Kornfeld, Chief Executive Officer of Jewish Family Services of Greenwich for a week-long immersion at Harvard Business School's Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management program.

Over six days, Hill worked alongside nonprofit leaders from 18 countries on real strategic challenges — sharpening mission focus, building capacity, and scaling impact. Multiple Greenwich leaders attending together reflects the strength of our town's nonprofit community, and the timing matters: rising costs and shifting federal policy are increasing demand for services while requiring more creativity from those leading the work.

"I return to Neighbor to Neighbor with fresh ideas, new skills, and an even deeper commitment to advancing our mission," said Hill.

We're excited about deeper collaboration and future partnership with JFS Greenwich and the YWCA Greenwich as we work together to serve our community. 💚
