Actress Toks Olagundoye was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer while filming the Paramount+ show Fatal Attraction. Refusing to let her diagnosis define her, she pursued and landed a role on Frasier just two weeks after completing chemotherapy. The experience helped her discover a new sense of calm and peace in her life. She recently told Essence that she had previously struggled with overthinking to the point of anxiety, but was now learning to let go and be present in the moment.

Toks has also become a passionate advocate for self-care, especially in the Black community, encouraging Black women to attend annual checkups, learn to perform breast self-exams, and seek medical attention when something doesn’t feel right. She emphasizes, "If you feel like there is something wrong with you, if you feel like something is not right in your body, go talk to your doctor. If they don’t listen to you, go talk to another. I don’t care if it takes you seven months to find someone, you keep going until you do. Until you get the imaging done or do whatever testing you need. If you can afford it, get a genetic test. We deserve the best."

Some encouraging news for our breast cancer community! AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo just received FDA approval for a promising new treatment called Datroway. This is especially meaningful because we know the challenging reality - while early-stage breast cancer often responds well to treatment, only about 1 in 3 people with metastatic breast cancer survive beyond 5 years.

The new drug specifically helps people with HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer that has either spread or can't be removed surgically, particularly after they've already tried hormone therapy and chemotherapy. And the results are promising - in clinical trials, Datroway helped people live about 2 months longer without their cancer getting worse compared to standard chemo. Even better, more people saw their cancer improve with Datroway (36%) compared to standard treatment (23%).

💝 Living with metastatic breast cancer? Your doctor can help you understand if Datroway might be right for you. New treatments are constantly emerging, and it's worth discussing all your options with your healthcare team.

When Real Housewives star Guerdy Abraira first received her breast cancer diagnosis, she was told it was stage zero and wouldn’t need chemotherapy. However, after further examination, she was ultimately diagnosed with stage 1B estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer and would undergo a lumpectomy, four sessions of chemotherapy, and 20 rounds of radiation.

Declared cancer-free in 2023, Guerdy recently shared with People that she is making the most of every moment and prioritizing self-care. "It’s all about quality, not quantity, and intimacy as a family… I’m living and I love it. [My fight] is still going on but I won’t make it a big topic—because I’m on the other side of cancer."

Experts at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium recently highlighted the connection between weight and breast cancer, finding elevated BMI increased risk for breast cancer mortality and distant recurrence among women with early-stage disease. This higher risk is due to fat cells producing estrogen. Extra fat cells mean higher estrogen levels in the body. Estrogen can make hormone-receptor-positive breast cancers develop and grow. The higher risk comes from fat cells making estrogen. With extra fat cells comes more estrogen, and estrogen can make hormone-receptor-positive breast cancers develop and grow. If you're considering weight loss, consult your doctor to determine a healthy weight for you and develop a safe, personalized plan that fits your needs.
