Greenwich residents held the town's fourteenth annual Wreaths Across America Ceremony on Saturday Dec.19th, 2020, at noon at Tomac Cemetery in Old Greenwich, CT, where 27 known Greenwich Revolutionary War and some Civil War patriots are buried. The ceremony is an offshoot of the Arlington National Cemetery's laying of the wreaths on veterans' gravesites at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Monument in Arlington National Cemetery at noon on this date every year. This ceremony is held simultaneously at over 1,600 locations throughout our country on a yearly basis to mark the celebration of our veterans.

The local Mary Bush Society of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) with the help of Katie Bacon Sumner, Vice Regent, Caryn Frick, Treasurer, Board Members, and other Members of the Putnam Hill Chapter DAR celebrated in the wintery snow with fellow Greenwich townspeople and descendants of these patriots. Every year the C.A.R. students honor veterans who are serving our country or those who have served our country to protect our freedoms. Greenwich townspeople learned about the importance of serving in the call of duty, and the great importance of remembering our veterans who have served and are serving to protect our country.

Pictured holding wreaths at the Greenwich Wreaths Across America Ceremony are (l-r) Tatum Wunderlich, Katie Sumner, Jacqueline Mulle, Lindsey Mulle, and Tucker Wunderlich.

The Putnam Hill Chapter D.A.R. of Greenwich is the largest chapter in CT with 170 members. The chapter has had very interesting activities and programs throughout this last year. Our 2020 Fall Programs included a visit to Fort Stamford, a guided tour of the Old Milford Cemetery in Greenwich, a Member November Chapter Meeting at the Indian Yacht Club featuring the guest speaker Rear Admiral Commander of the U.S. Navy, Greenwich native, Cindy Thebaud, and a Zoom Chapter Meeting & Holiday Party for members with the program “1776 Colonial Christmas and New Years and drew comparisons to the political unrest, and pandemic of today”.

To become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, one must be descended from a relative who helped, assisted, supported, paid supply tax, or participated in the Revolution. Any woman 18 years or older who can prove lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American Independence is eligible to join the D.A.R..

If you think you might be able to trace your roots back, genealogical help can be given by contacting Katie Sumner at [email protected]

Even a Pandemic cannot stop our Putnam Hill Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R) of Greenwich, Connecticut! Just like the redcoats didn't stop our revolutionary ancestors in the 1700's, neither will a virus in the 2020! On September 25, 2020 the ladies of the Putnam Hill Chapter donned their Covid- 19 masks in stride, sat socially distanced outside at the historic Bush Holly House in Greenwich and proceeded to hold their Annual Meeting to elect new Board Members for the 2020-2022 Board term.

Michelle Allen, as acting Regent officiated. At the end of the meeting the gavel and Regent's pin were passed to the new Regent, Karen Neilinger. Donning Covid-19 Masks, the Board Members were proudly sworn into office. The picture (below) shows many of those new Board Members proudly waiving the U.S. flag and their Putnam Hill Chapter D.A.R flag. The Pandemic was not going to stop these Ladies of the Daughters of the American Revolution from tradition!

The Putnam Hill Chapter organized in 1902 has a long history of being involved with the Greenwich community. The Chapter runs the D.A.R American History Award and the Good Citizens Award each year. This year, the annual D.A.R. American History Essay Contest's subject is: March 5, 2020 and the Boston Massacre because it is the 250th Anniversary of the Boston Massacre. March 5th was chosen because of a pivotal event which took place in Boston on that specific date that paved the way to the American Revolution.

This year's Essay Contest asks the contestants to: Imagine you are living in Boston, after witnessing the events of March 5th, describe your family's discussion about the Boston Massacre and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British King and Parliament. The Title for the Essay is: “The Boston Massacre”. The contest is open to all students in Grades 5-8. The length of the essay needs to be between 300-1,000 words. We encourage all students to enter the contest! Three monetary prizes are given out per grade. For guidelines contact: Katie Sumner, Vice Regent at 203-252-6731 for more information.

Another award the Chapter gives out is the D.A.R. Good Citizens Award. This prestigious award is given out every year to five Greenwich High School (GHS) students in their Senior year, chosen by their housemasters and guidance counselors from each of the five houses at the GHS. The award is based upon the qualities of academics, leadership, service, dependability, and patriotism shown in the home, school, and their community.
