🌿🌀 GARDENERS, IT'S TIME TO PREPARE! Here is the latest from James Spann - our favorite weatherman!

With Hurricane Isaias approaching the Gulf Coast, we encourage everyone to take a few precautions to protect their gardens, yards, and outdoor spaces.

Here are a few things you can do TODAY, before conditions deteriorate:

🪴 Bring in hanging baskets! Move hanging plants, lightweight pots, and container gardens into a garage or other secure location.

🌸 Protect your prized plants. Move delicate container plants to shelter. Lay large, top-heavy pots on their sides in a protected area if they cannot be brought indoors.

🌳 Check your trees. Look for loose or damaged limbs, but leave major tree work to professionals. Never trim trees as winds increase.

🌻 Secure garden decorations. Bird feeders, birdbaths, wind chimes, trellises, plant stands, and lightweight garden ornaments can become dangerous projectiles.

🥬 Harvest what you can. Pick ripe vegetables, herbs, and flowers before heavy rain and wind arrive.

🌧️ Check drainage. Clear leaves and debris from gutters, downspouts, and surface drains if it is safe to do so. Move containers away from areas prone to flooding.

🛠️ Put away garden tools and equipment. Secure wheelbarrows, watering cans, hoses, patio furniture, and anything else that could blow away.

🏡 Stay safe! Gardens can be replanted and flowers replaced. Your safety is always more important. Finish preparations early, stay indoors during dangerous weather, and never approach downed power lines.

🌿 A Great Start at the Matheson Library! 🌿

The Butler County Master Gardeners had a productive workday at the historic Matheson Library in Pine Apple, beginning work to transform the grounds into a new Heritage Garden.

Led by Master Gardener (and Pine Apple resident) Martha Grimes Lampkin, the garden will feature pollinator-friendly plants, pass-along favorites, and old-fashioned plants—the kinds Southern gardeners have shared for generations. The garden will also serve as an educational space, helping visitors learn more about pollinator plants and the important role they play in a healthy landscape and environment.

This first workday was all about preparing the site. Volunteers cleared years of overgrowth, trimmed tree limbs and shrubs, cleaned out planting areas, and began preparing beds for planting.

A big THANK YOU to Master Gardeners Linda, John, Danice, Teresa, and Martha, along with spouses Frank and James, and Pine Apple residents Joy, Lucy, and Bill, who generously volunteered their time and plenty of muscle to help!

Special thanks also go to Clint Coker of Coker Tree Service for lending a hand with removing and clearing some of the larger shrubs.

There is still much to do—and plenty of planting ahead—but what a difference a day made! 🌱

Be sure to look through the before, during, and after photos to see the progress. We look forward to watching this Heritage Garden take shape and become a beautiful addition to the Matheson Library and the Pine Apple community. 💚

We’re proud of our Butler County Master Gardener President, Linda Jarzyniecki, who spoke at today’s “Growing Garden Herbs & Cooking with Herbs” program hosted by the Autauga County - Alabama Extension and Autauga County Master Gardeners.

Linda shared her knowledge and expertise with fellow gardeners during a day devoted to growing, harvesting, and using fresh herbs. 🌱🍋

Thank you, Linda, for representing the Butler County Master Gardeners so well and for always being willing to share what you know with others! That spirit of learning, teaching, and serving is what the Master Gardener program is all about.

We love seeing Master Gardeners from across Alabama come together to exchange ideas, learn from one another, and take that knowledge back to their own communities.

🌸 What a fabulous Lunch & Learn! 🌸

A BIG thank you to Laurice Goorley for presenting today’s program, “Fabulous Flower Arrangements,” for the Butler County Extension Master Gardeners.

Laurice, a Master Gardener and Master Flower Show Judge, shared her love of flowers and years of floral design experience as she demonstrated both traditional flower arranging and the Japanese-inspired Ikebana style. We also learned how to use kenzan (flower frogs) to hold stems in place and create beautiful, artistic designs.

And what could be better than learning about flower arranging? Going home with one! 💐 Several of Laurice’s beautiful creations were given away as door prizes to some very happy attendees.

Thank you, Laurice, for sharing your talent, creativity, and knowledge with us, and thank you to everyone who joined us today. We loved having you!
