We’re joining organizations from across South Carolina for an afternoon all about resources, connections, and community.

🕰️ Fun Fact Friday: Let’s go back to 1983.

By the summer of 1983, Piedmont Skills—a day center for adults with disabilities operated by what is now Thrive Upstate—was serving approximately 500 people across Greenville County, with another 50 waiting for services.

So, what is today Thrive Upstate, then led by Executive Director Barbara Stone, was preparing to expand.

Piedmont Skills-Downtown was set to open in West Greenville, initially serving 23 adults at the former Greenville City Clinic on West Broad Street.

Then came an unexpected setback. A 15-passenger van designated for the new program was destroyed by fire, creating an immediate transportation challenge just as the center prepared to open.

The expansion came with financial risk. But when asked whether the organization could afford to take that risk, Barbara’s response was simple:

“We can’t afford not.”

More than four decades later, those four words offer a glimpse into Barbara Stone’s commitment to expanding opportunities for people with disabilities—and the legacy that continues to shape our community today.

Summer break was fun, but we have to admit—we’ve missed seeing everyone at our Greenville CAN Lunch & Learn Series. And we can’t think of a better reason to come back than this crew. 🐾

Next month, Greenville CAN Lunch & Learn returns with PAALS (Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services) as our September featured presenter!

PAALS trains service dogs to help people with disabilities increase independence, connection, and quality of life. In September, we’ll get an inside look at their work, maybe meet some of their dogs, and have a chance to network.

Back to school feels a little different for us this year... 🩶❤️🤍

This year, we're not just cheering students on from the sidelines...we're partnering with an incredible group of young leaders at Wade Hampton High School as they prepare for Spirit Week 2026!

Over the next several weeks, you'll get to meet the students, see behind-the-scenes moments, and watch this partnership come to life. We may be a little biased, but we think these Generals are something special.

We're ready to dive into all things Spirit Week, make a little history together, and show Greenville what can happen when students, schools, nonprofits, and an entire community come together.
