Over the past year, the staff at United Way and our Board of Directors have worked to better understand the needs of Greenville County families and how we can make the greatest impact with the resources entrusted to us.

The conclusion is clear: We must place greater focus on helping working families achieve stability if we want to continue to see our community prosper.

Read more about the process and where we go next in this op-ed.

The United Way, a major vehicle for local charitable giving, is changing how it funds Greenville nonprofits. Here’s an explanation from its board of directors.

Since Ride United launched in October 2025, we've helped Greenville County neighbors get to the places they need to be: work, doctors' appointments, job interviews and more.

Here's what that's looked like so far:

🚗 5,445 rides completed
🛣️ 36,994.26 total miles ridden
💵 $18.53 average cost per ride
💰 $106,416.34 saved for the people we serve

Ride United is a nationwide transportation access program created by United Way Worldwide in partnership with Lyft, and it's making a real difference right here in Greenville County.

Every ride is possible because of donors like you. Give today and help us keep more neighbors moving forward.

We're so glad we got to be part of Taji's journey. 💛

Jasmine Road, Inc. walks alongside women rebuilding their lives after trauma and exploitation, offering safe housing, counseling and the tools to heal and thrive on their own terms. Watching that work play out in Taji's story is why we're proud to support this organization.

Streaming Now: Interning at United Way of Greenville County 🎬
5 interns. 1 unforgettable summer. Here are some of their takeaways 👇

"I have learned that it is important to always be changing and evolving. Real progress happens when an organization is willing to have hard conversations and listen to the needs of the community." — Hannah Paulson

"I loved going out into the community to meet with funded partners. My favorite experience was learning about the Greenville Literacy Association and their nationally acclaimed history of teaching people to read for the first time in their lives." — James Garland

"Relationships are the work. Strong communication and empathy go a long way." — Micah Bryant

"Regardless of one's job title, everyone is helping everyone." — Ashley Garcia

"My favorite experience has been meeting new people and making connections. I love having the opportunity to hear and learn from others around me." — Birdie Paul

A huge thank you to the Riley Institute at Furman University for their continued partnership and for connecting us with these incredible interns this summer. And to our interns, thank you for your hard work and dedication these past few months. We wish each of you continued success in all that's next! 💙
