What a meaningful meeting today as the Noon Kiwanis Club of Greenville continued a tradition that began in 1988 — honoring the first responders who serve and protect our community every day.
We were proud to recognize this year’s First Responder Award recipients:
🚒 Firefighter Cooper Ruiz — Greenville Fire Department Firefighter of the Year
Recognized for earning six certifications in less than two years and for demonstrating outstanding leadership and commitment to the department.
🚓 Deputy Brandon Nafikov — Hunt County Sheriff’s Office Deputy of the Year
Sheriff Terry Jones commended Deputy Nafikov for his dedication, leadership, and six years of service to Hunt County.
🐕 Officer Alex Belteton & K9 Tango — Greenville Police Department Officer of the Year
Officer Belteton and Tango were recognized for their highway interdiction work, including a seizure valued at more than $600,000.
We also appreciated hearing updates from our local public safety leaders.
Greenville Fire Chief Jeremy Powell shared that the department’s new training facility and administration operations center are now complete and in use. The department is also planning a Citizens Fire Academy for the spring and continues to offer community ride-along opportunities when space allows.
Greenville Police Chief Chris Smith reported major progress in staffing, with 75 authorized positions and only three vacancies. He also shared plans for a new Drone as a First Responder program launching in October, which will allow a rooftop drone to quickly provide aerial assessment across much of the city before officers arrive. Class 44 of the Citizens Police Academy is also now underway.
Hunt County Sheriff Terry Jones spoke about the challenges of protecting nearly 900 square miles with only five patrol deputies per shift while serving a county population approaching 120,000. He also discussed jail capacity, narcotics enforcement efforts with Greenville Police, and the Sheriff’s Office civilian ride-along program.
Thank you to Dan Perkins for hosting today’s awards presentation, to our public safety leaders for joining us, and most importantly, to the men and women who serve Greenville and Hunt County every day.
Congratulations to Cooper Ruiz, Brandon Nafikov, Alex Belteton, and K9 Tango! We are grateful for your service and proud to recognize you. 💙
