The Last Russ Brown Memorial Tournament
Join us at The Golf Club at Indigo Run November 11th for the Last Swing, the final Russ Brown Memorial Tournament for a while. After the 2023 tournament, we will scale back operations as they relate to our annual events to allow more focus on our family. The foundation will continue to function in a limited capacity and raise money to support the mission, and events may return in the future as life allows. We have enjoyed our time with our For The Win family over the last several years, and it has been a huge help in our healing process. We appreciate and thank everyone who has supported and will continue to support the cause. It is because of your support that we have advanced leukemia research and impacted lives across the globe!

Today is World Cancer Day and, if you’re like us, it’s hard not to think about the exact moment that cancer first personally affected you. For our family, that moment came in May of 2012 when, after a few days of bad flu-like symptoms, Russ was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. His diagnosis caught us completely off guard and we had no idea just how difficult the battle ahead of us would be. After two and a half years of ups and downs and the most valiant fight we’ve ever witnessed, we ultimately lost Russ in August of 2014. At that point, we set our sights on launching For The Win with the goal of helping other patients and their families avoid our same outcome. Approximately every 3 minutes, someone will be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma in the United States. And while a lot of progress has been made in understanding and fighting these blood cancers, there’s still so much work to be done. Dear Russ,

Today you would have turned 70. We would have undoubtedly been celebrating you with good food, too many drinks and lots of stories – all alongside a perfect water view. But life had other plans in store. And while this certainly isn’t how we imagined your 70th birthday looking, we’ve still got plenty to celebrate.

There’s a quote that says “success isn’t about how much money you make, it’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.” And by that definition, you were probably one of the most successful people we’ll ever know. There’s a reason why hundreds of people showed up to your “Celebration of Life” – it’s because you made a real and meaningful difference in so many lives. That’s who you were at your core – someone who believed you were put on this earth to make a difference for others.

When we started For The Win in your memory, it was that exact trait we aimed to carry forward. We wanted to make a difference for the millions of patients and their families currently battling this cruel and heartbreaking disease. We wanted to help change the outcomes of the nearly 200,000 people who will be diagnosed with leukemia this year. We wanted to offer hope and optimism in the face of uncertainty and fear.

So, today, on your birthday, we’re making our next donation to MD Anderson. And because this would have been a milestone year for you, we decided For the Win should reach a milestone as well -- we’re making a donation of $100,000, bringing our total donations thus far to $300,000 (but in keeping with your indomitable spirit, we’re not stopping there).

This number represents so much to us – it represents your fight, your drive, your belief that you could change things for the better. But more than that, it represents keeping your legacy alive. And we can think of no better way to celebrate your 70th birthday than that. Happy Birthday, Russ. We miss you and love you to the moon and back.
