Currently blooming!

Blue toadflax is native to eastern North America from Ontario east to Nova Scotia and south to Texas and Florida. The annual appears mid spring to late summer, and is a nectar source for bees and butterflies.

What does this have to do with trees, you ask?

TreesUpstate regularly participates in stream bank restoration initiatives. And when the natural structure of a creek is restored, oftentimes native species immediately pop up - their seeds have been laying dormant waiting for an opportunity to grow. These pioneers help stabilize the banks in the short term, allowing the slower-growing, planted shrubs and trees time to settle in for long-term stability.

Now blooming in Greenville!

The common pawpaw (Asimina triloba) grows in shady, hardwood bottomlands with moist, fertile soils. It is a small understory tree that can grow up to 40 feet in height, and is native to and adapted to diverse climatic conditions. Native to the Eastern US from the Great Lakes down through the Piedmont, pawpaw fruit is the largest tree fruit native to the United States!

If you are lucky enough to find one in bloom, give the flower a quick smell; it has a faint (but possibly not so-pleasant) odor that attracts pollinators such as flies and carrion beetles. They are also protogynous, which means they have both female and male reproductive parts; the stigmas and anthers mature in sequence, in order to cross-pollinate with other trees.

This National Volunteer Appreciation Week, we’re especially grateful for TreesUpstate's corporate partners who invest in our region through hands-on service.

When teams step outside the office to plant trees, they’re building more than landscapes. They’re building community.
