Leadership Greenville Class 40’s project “Where the Trail Am I?” is a multifaceted campaign to promote an even more enjoyable and safer experience along the Greenville Health
System Swamp Rabbit Trail. After surveying more than 500 trail users, our team decided on a three-pronged approach: make trail and local business information more accessible; improve the user’s ability to identify a numeric
trail mapping location; and promote trail use and connectivity in neighboring communities along the trail. Making Trail & Local Business Information More Accessible
“Where the Trail Am I?” (WTT) has identified the need to grow the current shelter kiosk
program along the trail and rename them as Information Stations. By May 2014, our goal
is to give unique identities to two current locations and create five additional stations. These stations are natural stops for users, providing not only general trail information, but supplying wayfinding and local business detail. Improving the Numeric Trail Marking System
The GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail is the first trail system in the United States with a 1/10th-of -a-mile E911 system. Similar to a mile-marking system along an interstate, it’s important for users and responders to be able to recognize and identify a numeric feature to help
pinpoint a location. The WTT campaign will promote public awareness and repaint
weathered markings along 18 miles of the trail. Greenville County’s goal is to expand
this system to all trails. Connecting Neighboring Communities to the SRT
WTT’s idea of connectivity is a two-way street. Users of the trail benefit from knowing more about neighboring trail communities that are rich in history and undergoing impressive
redevelopment. Residents of these communities will become stakeholders in this incredible greenway amenity through health benefits and increased neighborhood satisfaction. Our plan is to build new Information Stations along the trail and in surrounding communities, as well as create a template that the Greenville Rec can use for years to come. Corporate and individual sponsors are needed to launch this program and provide on-going support for continued expansion.
