A great example of our work is Camp Spearhead started in 1968. This camp has been a top-of-the-list experience for people with special needs since the day it opened. In 2008 the camp became part of the County Parks and Recreation Department. In 2010, a new state-of-the-art camp was opened and the foundation gave over $37,000 to provide need-based scholarships for campers. In the past, the State pr

ovided funds to support core services and the Foundation provided supplemental services not funded by the State or Medicaid. But now we are being asked for funds to support basic services. Currently hundreds of desperate families in Greenville County need services but have been placed on a waiting list. This list has been frozen for two years, with no thaw in sight.

Our Story

Barbara Stone served as a champion for individuals with disabilities and the Foundation strives to continue her legacy. The Barbara Stone Foundation is a 501 (C) 3 non-profit organization based in Greenville County, South Carolina. Our primary focus is investing in innovative programs and initiatives for individuals with disabilities and influencing community systems, policies, and culture that result in more equitable opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Our support of organizations such as the Carolina Dance Collaborative meet immediate needs by promoting inclusion, thereby increasing recreation and arts opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Additionally, we created Greenville CAN which is a multi-stakeholder, collective impact coalition focused creating systemic community change resulting in more equitable opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Through this two pronged approach of investment and influence, we believe we can achieve our vision of a community where all individuals with disabilities flourish.
