Welcome back to VINTAGE TOY TUESDAY, where we talk about all things collectable from one of the greatest movies of all times. GHOSTBUSTERS!!!!
This week we jump ahead to something a little more recent, this time from Diamond Select Toys. Now DST is not the first toy company to produce figures based off the movie, in fact I am not sure who was the first. Probably Mattel in 2009 with the release of their 12" figures, if anyone knows please let us know! Back to DST, they started releasing their Ghostbusters line in December of 2015.
Series 1 - 5 had two different versions that they released. There was a basic version first released in December of 2015 and a select version first released in July of 2016. The basic version was just the figure with extra hands and accessory pieces. The select version had all the bits of the basic version but with an extra piece that was a special diaroma piece. Series 1-5 diaroma pieces, if you collected them all, would make up the roof top temple scene from the end of the 84 film. Series 6 - 8 had diaroma pieces that would make the doorway to the front of GB HQ/Hook & Ladder 8.
Collecting these were really my first start into collecting Ghostbuster "toys" outside of the Kenner line. Started with Dana, Peck, and Tully (basic versions) from Toys R Us right before they went out of business. Got lucky one day with a Facebook marketplace find with a complete rooftop diaroma for $200. Then found most of series 6 - 8 at a toy convention , the rest was mostly over paid from Ebay.
Pictured is two sets of the four guys and Dana, Tully Janine, and two slimers. The first set of the guys were DSTs first release of the guys, spread across series one and two. The second picture is their second release of the guys in 2017, these were re issues exclusive to Toys R Us. This time each figure had a ghost trap instead of just Winston and each figure had a set of two proton streams.
The last picture is Janine, two slimers, Tully, and Dana. These were spread across series 1 - 3. The Slimer had a variant exclusive to GameStop that was an exact copy of the standard version except that is glowed in the dark. The figures, other than the four guys, I really enjoyed. Most came with accessories that matched their figure. The Janine figure comes with a phone, chinese food boxes, and the buzzer call button. The Zombie Taxi Driver came with a steering wheel, and the Library Ghost came with a "symmetrical book stack".
Even though this was a very much sought after line when it came out it felt like they really didnt know what they were doing. They had reissues to fix fans complaining about only Winston had a trap and two proton streams. Later on in series 9 the RGB figures had name patches then in series 10 they were removed by painting over them but leaving a raised area were the patch was. The fans were also divided in liking how the figures were articulated.
We hope you have enjoyed this little bit of Ghostbusters collectable history and hope to see you next time on VINTAGE TOY TUESDAY!!
