St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School

St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School Weaving a Brighter Future. An Overview:

Since 1951, we've strived to instill a desire for life-long learning, leadership and service in each student.

The Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities, headquartered in Syracuse, N.Y., lead our school and serve as staff and faculty for our Pre-K through 6th grade student body. We are a Franciscan Catholic School that originally served the African-American community and today is open to all families. Our school logo represents the interconnectedness of our Franciscan and Black American heritag

e. The T-shaped cross in the center is the traditional Franciscan cross known as the Tau. The colorful and bold pattern behind the Tau cross is a Kente pattern that holds a special meaning to both our school and parish community. Kente is a royal, sacred “woven cloth” that originated in Ghana. It is an icon of African cultural heritage around the world. Our Kente combines several meanings: to have a sense of direction in life; to live a dynamic life through the help and guidance of others; to live with courage and confidence; and to protect. The multi-colored, woven nature of the Kente inspired our school tagline, “Weaving a Bright Future.” The tagline intertwines our heritage, mission, and core values. Through these strong bonds, we can help weave a bright future for our students! Our Core Values:

Distinctly Franciscan

Franciscan values are fundamental threads in our identity: peacemaking, having a joyful spirit, respecting all creation, supporting the poor, and seeking justice and truth. Pursuing knowledge for the sake of knowledge is vanity. As a Franciscan school, we seek truth through knowledge. We also honor the dignity of every person and model our world based on the harmony of God’s creation. Faithfully Catholic

We welcome families of every spiritual background who are open to receiving a Catholic school education. Every morning, our students pray the Prayer of St. Francis and our faculty prays the Prayer of the Divine Office together. We strengthen our faith through weekly Mass for Grades 2-6, a Prayer Service for the younger children, daily religion classes, and celebrations of feast days throughout the year. Proudly Diverse

Our students, faculty and staff make up a colorful pattern of different ethnic and racial backgrounds. To celebrate our original African-American roots, we learn about Black History and Black Catholic saints. Through a variety of activities and partnerships, we act with compassionate concern, cultural sensitivity and purposeful service to people with varying needs and cultural backgrounds. Courageously Supportive

Education takes courage. So does social justice. The generous spirit of our parish community, donors, volunteers, parents, faculty and staff enable us to offer flexible tuition and a strong referral system for families who need help in different ways. We fearlessly advocate for our students, their families, and our community. Ultimately Successful

A St. Anthony’s School education prepares students for middle school and beyond. Our students develop a firm foundation to build on during their next academic steps. Our alumni are confident in their abilities and talents. They are willing to serve. A recent survey noted that over 90 percent of St. Anthony’s students graduate from high school, a rate significantly higher than that of our local public school district.

Healthy bodies, happy hearts! 🍎✨
We are still smiling after yesterday’s St. Anthony's Health Fair! The gym was filled with learning, laughter, and a whole lot of wellness.

A massive thank you to our incredible coordinators, Krystin Maini and Shujwana Shell, and our Health Ministry! Your vision and hard work made this such a success for our students.

Special thanks to the local community vendors who spent Friday morning with us! Our students loved learning from the experts and seeing how wellness works in the real world.

To our volunteers and the setup/cleanup crew: you are truly the hands and feet of this parish! Thank you for giving your time to make this event possible. Seeing the kids have such a wonderful time while learning about wellness was the best start to our weekend.

🌟 Teacher Tuesday Spotlight: Mrs. Laverne Wicker! 🌟
Meet Mrs. Laverne Wicker, a joyful and dedicated member of our St. Anthony preschool and afterschool team. Originally from Charlotte, NC, she has made Greenville her home for over 30 years.

Mrs. Laverne is the seventh of twelve siblings, a West Mecklenburg High School graduate, and a former Army ROTC student. She later worked in the textile industry for 14 years before marrying her husband, Anthony. They have been blessed with 33 years of marriage, two adult children, seven grandchildren, and many Godchildren.

Now in her fourth year at St. Anthony, Mrs. Laverne brings warmth, patience, and a nurturing spirit to our 3-year-olds and afterschool students. She is also continuing her Early Childhood Education studies at Greenville Tech.

In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, singing, dancing, and spending time with her family.

We are grateful for all she brings to our St. Anthony family!

This morning’s Donuts with Dad was truly heartwarming!

It was incredible to see so many dads, grandfathers, and father figures show up to share a special moment with their children. Your presence filled the school with joy, laughter, and the kind of memories that make this season so meaningful.

Thank you for taking the time—during an already busy holiday season—to be with us and enjoy a little fellowship and fun. We are grateful for each of you and the love and support you pour into our school community.

Teacher Tuesday Spotlight: Mrs. Gretchen Carrick!

We are delighted to introduce Mrs. Gretchen Carrick, our newest faculty member and K4 Lead Teacher at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School.

Mrs. Carrick and her husband are the proud parents of six children, and she cherishes time spent outdoors with her family, supporting their activities, and sharing sweet chocolate treats with her daughter.

She holds degrees in Early Child Development (Birth–K) and Business Management from UNC Charlotte. Her extensive background includes serving as the Vice Director of a Children’s Home in China, five years in Early Intervention, teaching in Catholic schools, and supporting individuals with disabilities through caregiving roles.

Now that her children are all school-aged, Mrs. Carrick is grateful for the opportunity to return to the classroom—and we are truly blessed to welcome her to our St. Anthony’s community.

Please join us in warmly welcoming Mrs. Gretchen Carrick!

✨Teacher Tuesday Spotlight: Mrs. Dawnhaines “Mrs. Dawn” Davis

Meet Mrs. Dawn, our dedicated Religion Instructor who has been part of the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School family for 14 years - and whose connection to our community began when she was a student here herself.

A longtime member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Mrs. Dawn has served in many ministries over the years. She is a retired lector and currently serves as a Eucharistic Minister. Her commitment to faith and service extends beyond our parish as a Golden Soror in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, a charter member of Jack and Jill of America, and a former volunteer at St. Francis Hospital.

Her background includes teaching dance, coordinating activities for seniors, singing monthly on Main Street with The Our Father Group, and many years of preparing students for First Communion. Fluent in French, she enjoys reading, arts and crafts, dancing, cooking, and traveling.
Blessed with 5 children, 6 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren, Mrs. Dawn brings warmth, joy, and deep faith to all she does.

We are grateful for you, Mrs. Dawn! 💛
