Yesterday was a big one for LiveWell Greenville and our Food Security Coalition. Mayor Knox White and Councilmember Tina Belge officially declared July 23 as Summer Meals Day here in Greenville, with the proclamation read right at the Roper Mountain Science Center summer meals site.

Mayor White also announced the city is joining the Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger, a national coalition of mayors working to end childhood hunger in their communities.

A huge shoutout to Greenville County Schools, who make so much of this possible. Their Seamless Summer Food Service Program has been running for over 20 years, and this summer alone, GCS's Food and Nutrition Services team has served more than 210,000 meals to kids across Greenville County. Thank you, GCS, for making sure no student has to choose between summer and a full stomach.

Partners like Upstate Circle of Friends, Project Host, and Harvest Hope also help fill the gaps so families have real options during the summer months.

🍎 Summer Meals in Action: A Community Effort to Be Proud Of

This past week, at the invitation of LiveWell Greenville, I had the honor of joining Senator Jason Elliot at Armstrong Elementary School to see our local summer food program firsthand.

To say we were impressed by the entire operation would be an understatement!

Approximately 15,320 children in Greenville County are food insecure. When the school year ends, the risk of hunger rises. While federally funded “Summer Break Cafés” provide free meals to kids 18 and under, fewer than 14% of eligible children actually receive a summer meal.

INNOVATION & POLICY HURDLES

To reach more kids, programs like Armstrong’s use a highly efficient drive-up model. Sadly, keeping these take-home options open faces strict federal hurdles that limit this flexibility strictly to rural areas, leaving families in our fast-growing, suburban areas caught in the "Greenville Gap."

With South Carolina opting out of the federal SUN Bucks grocery benefit program this year, finding local solutions is more critical than ever.

COLLABORATION TO THE CORE

Feeding children isn’t a partisan issue.

it’s a community problem.

Bridging this gap relies on an incredible network of local schools, churches, and nonprofits stepping up.

A huge thank you to Greenville County Schools, Upstate Circle of Friends, Project Host, and Harvest Hope for leading the charge.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT ON LIVEWELL GREENVILLE

As I mentioned, it was LiveWell Greenville who brought us out to see this program in action, and it's easy to see why. Feeding kids during the summer isn't as simple as opening a cafeteria door and hoping families show up. It takes massive coordination.

For nearly 15 years, LiveWell Greenville has acted as a "backbone" organization. They don't try to replace the work of our local schools or food pantries.

They connect them.

They ensure that families know where to go, identify gaps, and ensure groups aren't operating in silos.

Through their focus on Food Security, Active Living, and Community Engagement, they help local people solve local problems right here in District 19.
