Greenville Literacy Association’s mission is to enrich our community by increasing the literacy and employability of our citizens. GLA is a not for profit, charitable organization formed under Section 501(c)3 of the U.S. Donations to Greenville Literacy Association are tax-deductible as charitable contributions for US federal income tax purposes. GLA promotes an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. We strive to be a community where people of different cultures, intellectual positions, and lifestyles can come to learn and give back to the community. GLA provides educational opportunities and support services on an individual basis including participants with disabilities such as learning, physical, emotional and mental. Through local partnerships, we do our best to provide wrap-around services to encourage stabilization, including referrals to partner agencies, based on students’ needs and goals. Did you know? Across South Carolina, 1 in 5 working-age adults reads at or below a third-grade level. 📚

That means trouble filling out a job application, reading a prescription label, or helping a child with homework. Low literacy isn't a personal failing. It's a gap in access, and it can be closed.

At GLA, we offer one-on-one and small-group instruction to help adults in Greenville County build the reading, writing, and English skills they need to move forward.

Kate studied English for more than ten years in Korea, but speaking it with confidence was still hard. Two years after moving to Greenville, she's found her voice at GLA, along with a group of friends cheering her on. 💚

Stories like Kate's are why our ESL classes focus on real conversation and community, not just grammar. And Kate, our teachers are very happy too!

What will your business look like 5 years from now? 👀

Our BUILD Your Future students are putting their creativity and entrepreneurial vision to work! As part of a class activity, students have started creating magazine-style collages imagining the future of their businesses—and what they hope will be said about them five years from now.

From big dreams to bold ideas, they’re thinking beyond today and creating a vision for where they want to go. We can’t wait to see their finished magazine covers and hear the stories behind their future businesses!

This is what BUILD is all about: turning ideas into action and helping our students BUILD their future. 💚

Happy World Teachers' Day! 🍎

At Greenville Literacy Association, our instructors and tutors are at the heart of everything we do. Week after week, they give their time, patience, and care to help adult learners in our community build the skills they need to reach their goals, whether that's earning a GED, learning English, advancing at work, or reading a bedtime story to their child.

Their dedication changes lives, and it makes Greenville, and the world, a better place.

Book donations are back open! 📚

Donations are open again for The Really Good, Really Big, Really Cheap Book Sale, and we're ready to take your books. Every book you donate helps fund GLA's adult education programs right here in Greenville.

Before you drop off, please keep in mind:

Books should be in good condition, with no mold, mildew, or water damage
We can't accept magazines, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, encyclopedias, or computer books published before 2021

Donating a large amount? Please call us at 864-467-3456 first so we can set up the best time for your drop-off.

Save the date for the 2027 sale: the kickoff party is Aug. 12, and the sale runs Aug. 14–15. Learn more at greenvilleliteracy.org.

Happy National Book Month! 📚

October is one of our favorite months at Greenville Literacy Association, so we're starting it off by sharing books with our students. We've filled our center with shelves and tables of free books that students can browse, pick out, and take home. Mysteries, thrillers, romance, self-help, how-to guides (yes, even Auto Repair for Dummies): there's something for every reader.

Our team couldn't resist doing a little browsing of their own. We can't wait to see our students find a new book to get lost in!
