Mesh is a material made of threads or wires woven together with open spaces in between. You might see it on a bag of garlic or onions at the grocery store, on a screen door, or on a soccer goal.

Mesh is a great word for young readers because it’s easy to decode. It’s a closed syllable with a short e, and it ends with the digraph sh. Many of our students can sound it out but have never heard what it means. When we connect a word to something real, it sticks. Next time you’re at the store, ask your child to find something made of mesh.

One teen. One year. 100 letters. When high schooler Aidan Colvin felt discouraged by dyslexia, he wrote to 100 successful people who had dyslexia too, asking how they made it. He didn’t expect answers. But he got them. This short, inspiring true story is for anyone who’s ever felt different… and for the people who believe in them. Grab this quick read for Dyslexia Awareness Month, and learn more about the challenges of the 1 in 5.

Our tutors do so much more than help students learn to read. They show up consistently, listen with care, encourage growth, celebrate every small win, and help students build the confidence and independence to succeed. During National Tutoring Week, we are grateful for the dedicated Augustine Literacy Project tutors who make a lasting difference in the lives of their students, one lesson and one relationship at a time. 💙💛

This Dyslexia Awareness Month, we’re proud of our Orton-Gillingham roots and our commitment to children with dyslexia. The explicit, systematic instruction at the heart of our work also helps children who struggle to read for other reasons. At Augustine Literacy Project, we meet each young reader where they are and help them build the skills and confidence to thrive.
