Urgent Request: Can you help? Immediate financial assistance needed for a single mother. Her 24 year- old son will be undergoing an un-expected open heart surgery in the next few days. As a community, can we all pull together and relieve some of the burden so this mother can just be with her son during this critical and devastating time in their lives, without the stress of finances. We would like to try and cover her expenses for the next couple of months. Any donation helps us reach the goal. The nomination has been submitted to us by a Greenville friend of Rebecca, who writes the following:

“I would like to nominate my friend Rebecca Nix and her son Vince Story for a request of emergency funds to help her through an unexpected and terrible part of her life. Rebecca’s 24 year-old son was diagnosed eight weeks ago with an infection that has caused one of the valves of his heart to deteriorate. Without full open heart surgery, he will not survive. Because of the level of infection in his body, he is also having lung surgery on Monday as he may not have the open heart surgery until his body is completely free of infection. He has been fighting this battle for months; first in a hospital in Philadelphia; then at a point of brief stabilization, he was moved to a hospital in Augusta, GA. As his mother, Rebecca obviously feels the need to be with him, and as such, has taken a leave of absence from work. She is a single mother. She has been staying in her son’s hospital room as she does not have funds to do otherwise. My request is for our friends who know Rebecca (as well those who do not) to donate money to help her through this tragic time of her life. These funds will be used to pay her personal expenses, since she may not currently work, as well as support her financial needs to be with her child in Georgia. She simply needs funds to bridge the gap between now and when she returns to work. Depending on the outcome of Vince’s surgeries, Rebecca may bring him to Greenville to live.”
This is the greatest fear for any parent to face. Your prayers and support are a blessing and greatly appreciated! You can donate online at: www.heartstep.org. – Please specify “for Rebecca” in the comments.

This is a current post we are working to assist with at Heartstep.org. We received this nomination from Patty Wells. She wrote, "I am asking for help to raise money for a good used car for Josie, this should be the last hurdle to overcome! I first met Josie 2 years ago. She has such a bright and bubbly personality, even though she has been through so much! Unusual circumstances pushed Josie to be out on her own in her junior year of high school, she continued and graduated high school.
I always noticed how she was self-conscience about her teeth, they were overcrowded and crooked. I talked to an Orthodontist that I knew, Dr. Mark McInnis in Clemson, he offered a discount. Now the next step was to put a posting on Heartstep.org. Thanks to Heartstep.org we received ONE donation that paid the balance in full! If you could have seen Josie's face when I told her!!! You can see her beautiful smile and happy outlook in her posted picture.
Next, grants and scholarships for school! I want to thank the staff members at Tri County Tech that helped me with all my questions and paper work for Josie's scholarships! Josie is close to finishing up her 1st semester. Josie's plan is to take 2 years at Tri County then transfer to Clemson, she wants to be an elementary school teacher!
Josie has been borrowing a car but a deer ran in front of the car and it is no longer available. We could finance a car but at her age the full coverage insurance is over $300 a month, then you add a car payment, Josie cannot afford this. Josie works 4 to 5 nights a week.
Our goal is to raise this money to buy a GOOD used car. Having her own vehicle will remove the burden and the worry of not owning her own car! With her own car she will no longer have to think about how she will get to back and forth to college and work. Thankful, this young woman is thankful everyday, I am thankful to be able to help her! I want to thank you in advance for any donation!
To meet Josie is to love her.
I have created a gofundme page and you can make a contribution there https://www.gofundme.com/A-Car-for-Josie or you can make a tax deductible gift to heartstep.org (be sure to indicate that the gift is for Josie)."

My name is Patty Wells, I volunteer, I do fund raisers, I see someone in need and I just can't help myself. Then there is Josie, I am such a fan of this young girl. I first met Josie 2 years ago. She has such a bright and bubbly personality, even though she has been through so much! Unusual ...

The Utton's are in their twenties and were married 2 years ago. Heather is a nursing student and pharmacy technician. Raymond lost his job after the flooding but has been working a stocking job to keep them going. They had a furnished home they were renting but during the Columbia, SC floods they lost absolutely everything. They had renters insurance but not flood insurance so the coverage will not cover their losses. Fortunately, their vehicles will be replaced by the insurance. Even though many weeks have passed since this devastation there is still much need and very limited resources for those without insurance. Currently they are staying with their parents but they have a home available for them to move into and rent in February of 2016. They need everything to furnish and stock a home, items such as: couch, chair, dining set, bedroom furniture, kitchen items, microwave, dishes, pot and pans, towels/ wash cloths, blankets, silverware and any other items that you may have in good condition that you would be willing to share to help meet their needs. They also have a dog so if you have dog toys, bed, etc those items would be helpful and appreciated as well. Please send us a message and let us know if you can help in any way. Heartstep.org

NEED: Help with braces for a teenager struggling to finish school with no parents.
NOMINATED BY: Caring Greenvillian

"I have been helping a young women that is a high school senior. We will call her "J". She has been through so much during her time on earth. She has a 3.29 GPA, she is an upbeat happy young women, she asks for nothing. “J” will qualify for the Life scholarship and dreams about being a teacher. Her mother and father divorced when she was two. She doesn’t have any memories of her mother from then. "J" was mistreated so badly in her fathers home she had to move out and move in with a friend. We have borrowed a car so "J" can go back and forth to work, she works hard and is saving her money so she can get a car of her own, she knows the borrowed car will have to go back one day. Her father and step mother do not help her in any way, financially or emotionally: she never sees her real mother. As I mentioned “J” doesn’t ask for anything, however her teeth are in really bad shape, you can see that in her guarded smile. I have spoken with an orthodontist in Clemson, Mark McInnis, he has offered to take 20% off of the total amount leaving approx. $4760.00 due. She might need 4 teeth pulled by McInnis wants to wait to see if he can get them moved with the braces. When I took her for a consultation she told the orthodontist, “ I would wear a head band to school every day if I need to! To meet “J” is to love her."

Any donations will be greatly appreciated and can be made to: WOULD WE HAVE DONATIONS SENT TO YOU AND THEN THE ORTHO OR DENTIST? Or, if you know of a dentist who would donate these services that would be an amazing act of kindness invested in a wonderful young soul who is in a very sad situation.

"J" is on medicaid and gets free lunch at school. I am nominating her because she needs a chance at life, she needs to know that there are people that actually care. Could you imagine not getting as much as a card on Christmas or your birthday from your parents? Could you imagine that they live 15 minutes down the road and don’t want to see you, they don’t call, they don’t ask you if you are doing ok, they don’t ask you if you are hungry, or if you need a winter coat?

NOMINATION ID: 141610
NEED: Washer and Dryer and/or assistance with Christmas presents for children
NOMINATED BY: Mother

My son lives alone aside from his caregiver that comes to help with him for three hours a day, Monday through Friday. He has had serious health issues from multiple sclerosis that limit his mobility, and sight and leave him almost completely confined to his home. Couple this with the fact that he has two children, who are 15 and 11 years old, that love him very much. He was looking forward to purchasing Christmas gifts for them considering the two children don't live with him, and he only has the chance to see them once every week for an hour at a time, and yet his small monthly disability stipend doesn't really allow for this due to all of his expenses, both medical and financial. He is currently not receiving any assistance aside from his monthly disability check. Michael is also in dire need of a new washing and drying machine set, since his old ones are in disrepair. This would assist in cutting the cost of his monthly electricity bill as well as allow for his caregiver to better see to Michael's needs. I'm making this nomination because I feel that my son is in a difficult situation in terms of finances and because of this he can't afford certain appliances such as the aforementioned ones.
