You never know who you'll meet out along County Road 12. There’s a non profit in Butler County called Hope Afield. It’s a mentorship program that works with at risk kids and teens, and sometimes it has some big helpers.

What a great afternoon at Hope Afield! Twenty-four students and ten volunteers closed out the after-school program for this school year with free play, games, pizza and a review of our theme “Faith in Action”. Students were challenged in a high energy game combination of kickball and dodge ball. Not sure who had the most fun - the students or the adults watching! 😊 A few games of Gaga ball were also played. It is always a group favorite!

In our review of faith, we discussed that God is faithful in all He does and God’s plans are always best. “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord and whose confidence is in Him.” Jeremiah 17:7

We are blessed with wonderful mentors and helpers who keep this program moving forward. Thanks to Sarah Smith, Pam Holp, Brenda Cole, Debbie Jean Owens, Charity Elliott, Chasity Talley, Mike Torres, Erick and Callie Horne, Robert Powell and Russell Demings for serving! This afternoon, we honored Mike Torres and Brenda Cole who will be moving forward to serve in new ministry opportunities. We will miss seeing them on a weekly basis but know they will continue to share and serve God! We will begin our Summer large group activities on June 9th when our Day Camps begin. We are looking forward to a fun filled Summer!

Thanks to Ms. Callie for bringing Sugarfoot, her miniature horse, for a visit this afternoon. Using Sugarfoot and Hope Afield’s horse, Hook, we learned about caring for horses, how horses can react and the calming and healing effect horses can have on individuals.

Students also used their creative thinking and artistic skills to paint a picture of what they envisioned as the “perfect destination”. We enjoyed learning about each other’s interests! In life application, we discussed that Jesus is coming back and that gives us great hope for reaching the perfect destination! John 14 tells us that He is preparing a place for all who follow Him and He will return to take us there!

We had a great group of students and volunteers! Thanks to Dale Brannon, Pam Holp, Sarah Smith, Debbie Jean Owens, Callie Horne, Mike Torres, Robert Powell, Russell Demings and Ronnie Matthews for assisting with all of this afternoon’s activities! You are greatly appreciated for mentoring Hope Afield’s students!

“Leadership” was the word for the day! Through activities and games, students learned that everyone has influence. Leadership is not about position, it’s about impact. We were challenged as leaders to know ourselves and improve ourselves; set the example and look out for others.

Hula hoops and bean bags were used during game time to stress the importance of taking aim at our goals and striving for the winning prize. “Playing for the trophy that lasts” was our life application lesson. I Peter 1:8-9 and Matthew 25:21 were our scripture references. Everything we chase on earth: trophies, popularity and success all fade. But eternal life never ends. Heaven doesn’t fade. Live for the moment when God says, “Well done!” Thanks to Ronnie Matthews, Robert Powell, Russell Demings, Mike Torres, Pam Holp, Dale Brannon and Callie Horne for assisting with activities, set up, meal time and clean up!

A tremendous thank you to Todd Green and Bonnie Plants for partnering with Hope Afield to furnish raised bed gardening for our students. Representatives from Bonnie Plants and Daniel Salters with Quality Coop installed six containers and provided soil and plants. Students learned about various plants and flowers and the proper care of them. We look forward to this gardening project and hope to enjoy tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini and sweet potatoes later this summer!

Students also enjoyed a nature scavenger hunt searching for items from green and growing to alive and moving to smaller than your thumb! Romans 15:13 was one of the verses discussed on our topic of “Faith gives us a confident hope in God’s future.” Faith is trusting God. Let’s live like God is already working on something bigger! Thanks to Callie Horne, Pam Holp, Sarah Smith, Charity Elliott, Debbie Jean Owens, Mike Torres, Russell Demings, Robert Powell and Ronnie Matthews for your assistance with all of today’s activities. We appreciate all that you do to make a difference in the lives of Hope Afield’s students!

Thank you to Freida Cross and the Fort Deposit Arts Council for welcoming Hope Afield’s students and their families to Calico Fort today! We didn’t capture everyone in our arrival photo but we had a total of thirty-four in attendance. We appreciate the Council’s generosity of free tickets, meal tickets and student cash to enjoy the many activities! The children’s area was a big hit as well as the petting zoo. Talented exhibitors and lots of great food choices completed a full day of fun! Thank you to all who worked so diligently to make Calico Fort a huge success!
