During Women’s History Month, I want to honor Dr. Treca DeShields, a remarkable woman who made a lasting impact on our community in Clinton, South Carolina.

Born and raised in Clinton, Dr. DeShields dedicated her life to serving youth and families. A graduate of Benedict College and the University of South Carolina, she founded several programs and organizations focused on empowering young people and strengthening families, including the Save Our Youth Choir and multiple community outreach initiatives.

Dr. DeShields survived a life-threatening assault that changed her life forever and deepened her commitment to serving God and others. From that moment forward, she devoted her life to building opportunities, mentoring youth, and uplifting her community.

She was a dear friend to my sister Laura, and I personally look at her as a spiritual mother. Her faith, resilience, and heart for service continue to inspire so many of us.

This Women’s History Month, I celebrate her life, her strength, and the legacy she leaves behind. 💛

🌸 Women’s History Month Spotlight: My Mother, Hattie Mae Shands Suber 🌸

This Women’s History Month, I honor the life and legacy of my mother, Hattie Mae Shands Suber, who transitioned on October 24, 2023.

Born January 22, 1930, in Clinton, South Carolina, my mother was the definition of excellence, discipline, faith, and service. She was an educator, administrator, trailblazer, and community leader long before doors were easily opened for women who looked like her.

A proud graduate of Benedict College, she went on to earn her Master’s degree through Howard University and South Carolina State University. She dedicated 30 years to education and made history as the first African American woman to serve as Assistant Principal of a high school in Laurens County. Even in retirement, she continued serving—elected to the Laurens County School Board, where she later retired as Vice Chairperson.

Her faith anchored her life at New Bethel AME Church, where she served faithfully in leadership, music ministry, and mentorship for decades.

She believed deeply in community involvement and was an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., the National Council of Negro Women, the NAACP, and the Order of Eastern Star. She was truly a “power for good in society.”

My mother was stern and loving at the exact same time.
She was intelligent and unwavering.
She carried herself with dignity and expected excellence.

Life is not the same without her physical presence. But her voice, her lessons, her strength — they live in me daily.

This Women’s History Month, I celebrate not only the history she made in her community — but the history she made in my life.

Forever grateful. Forever her daughter. 💛

🌸 Women’s History Month Spotlight: Laura R. Sturkey 🌸

This Women’s History Month, I honor my sister, Laura — a woman of strength, beauty, resilience, and unwavering faith.

Laura was a 30-year licensed cosmetologist, salon owner, community leader, and most importantly, a devoted mother. She fought Stage IV metastatic breast cancer for 5½ years — far beyond her original prognosis — with grace, courage, and a smile that could light up any room.

Laura taught me what real strength looks like.
She taught me how to be stern and loving at the same time.
She showed me that even in the hardest battles, you show up with dignity and faith.

Although she never had the chance to meet her granddaughter Layla, Layla carries her beauty and charisma — a living reminder that legacy doesn’t end, it continues.

Because of Laura, I Am My Sister’s Bra Foundation was born. Her life continues to impact families across our community, ensuring no one fights breast cancer alone.

This month, and every month, I celebrate you, Laura.
Your strength lives on.
Your love lives on.
Your story lives on.

💕 Valentine’s Weekend Reminder: Love Looks Like Showing Up 💕

As Valentine’s Weekend begins, our timelines will be filled with flowers, chocolates, and grand gestures of love. And while those things are beautiful, we’re reminded that the most powerful form of love is presence.

Love is showing up for a doctor’s appointment.
Love is sitting beside someone during treatment.
Love is sending a text that says, “I’m thinking about you.”
Love is reminding someone they are not alone in their fight.

At I Am My Sister’s Bra Foundation, love is at the center of everything we do. It’s what carried my sister Laura through her journey, and it’s what continues to carry so many survivors and fighters today.

This weekend let’s extend love beyond romance.
Check on a survivor. Encourage someone in treatment. Schedule your mammogram. Support someone who may be fighting quietly.

Because love isn’t just something we say.
It’s something we show. 💗

🎀 Sis… this is your reminder. 🎀

Have you scheduled your mammogram yet?

Early detection is not just a slogan — it is life-saving. When breast cancer is found early, treatment options are often less aggressive and survival rates are significantly higher.

Do it for your children.
Do it for your future self.
Do it for the ones who love you.

And if fear is holding you back, talk to us. We understand. We’ve been there.

Laura’s journey taught us that time matters. Don’t delay.

📞 Make the appointment.
💗 Save a life.

💗 You Are Not Alone. And You Never Have To Be. 💗

At I Am My Sister’s Bra Foundation, we walk beside women and men who are fighting breast cancer — not just with words, but with real support.

We know that a diagnosis can bring fear.
We know treatment can bring financial strain.
We know survivorship brings its own journey.

But we also know this:
✨ Early detection saves lives.
✨ Support systems matter.
✨ Community changes outcomes.

My sister Laura was given 3–6 months to live. She fought for 5½ years. And one of the reasons she lived longer than expected was because she was surrounded by love, support, and people who refused to let her fight alone.

That is why this foundation exists.

If you are in treatment…
If you are a survivor…
If you are caring for someone you love…

We are here. 💕

📅 Schedule your mammogram.
📣 Encourage your sister, mother, daughter, friend to do the same.
🤝 And if you need support, reach out.

Because no one in the Upstate should battle breast cancer alone.

💗🎀

If you’d like, I can also create:

A more powerful “call to action” version

A survivor spotlight version

A donation-driven post

Or one tied to your upcoming 2026 walk

Just tell me the vibe you want today, Alicia 💕

As we close out this year, our hearts are full. 💕

This year, I Am My Sister’s Bra Foundation continued to stand on one mission: ensuring that no one walks their breast cancer journey alone. Because of YOU—our supporters, volunteers, partners, donors, and prayer warriors—we were able to show up with love, resources, encouragement, and tangible support when it mattered most.

We honored survivors.
We supported fighters.
We remembered those we’ve lost.
And we carried forward Laura’s legacy with purpose, compassion, and faith.

Every story shared, every dollar given, every event attended, and every word of encouragement reminded us that community changes outcomes. Support saves lives. Love sustains hope.

As we step into a new year, we do so with gratitude for what has been done and expectation for what is still to come. The work is not finished—but together, we are stronger, louder, and more determined than ever.

From our foundation family to yours—thank you for standing with us, believing in the mission, and being your sister’s (and brother’s) bra.

Here’s to continued hope, healing, and impact in the year ahead. 🎗️✨
