🌸 Women’s History Month Spotlight: My Mother, Hattie Mae Shands Suber 🌸
This Women’s History Month, I honor the life and legacy of my mother, Hattie Mae Shands Suber, who transitioned on October 24, 2023.
Born January 22, 1930, in Clinton, South Carolina, my mother was the definition of excellence, discipline, faith, and service. She was an educator, administrator, trailblazer, and community leader long before doors were easily opened for women who looked like her.
A proud graduate of Benedict College, she went on to earn her Master’s degree through Howard University and South Carolina State University. She dedicated 30 years to education and made history as the first African American woman to serve as Assistant Principal of a high school in Laurens County. Even in retirement, she continued serving—elected to the Laurens County School Board, where she later retired as Vice Chairperson.
Her faith anchored her life at New Bethel AME Church, where she served faithfully in leadership, music ministry, and mentorship for decades.
She believed deeply in community involvement and was an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., the National Council of Negro Women, the NAACP, and the Order of Eastern Star. She was truly a “power for good in society.”
My mother was stern and loving at the exact same time.
She was intelligent and unwavering.
She carried herself with dignity and expected excellence.
Life is not the same without her physical presence. But her voice, her lessons, her strength — they live in me daily.
This Women’s History Month, I celebrate not only the history she made in her community — but the history she made in my life.
Forever grateful. Forever her daughter. 💛
