Realizing that Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated needed its presence felt in the Greater Greenville, South Carolina area, Soror Phillis Jones Kirk set out on a mission. Thus, on Thursday, August 12, 1993 at 7:00 pm, the Eta Sigma Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was officially chartered. Soror Ann Broughton officiated the ceremony. The newly chartere
d Eta Sigma Sigma Chapter was composed of seven former members of the Xi Sigma Chapter. The chartering members and their offices were: Soror Lula Thompson, Basileus; Soror Catherine Allen, Anti-Basileus; Soror Gladys Barksdale, Grammateus; Soror Vilvin Garrison, Anti-Grammateus; Soror Diane Leonard, Tamiochus; Soror Gabriella Robinson, Epistoleus; Soror Lori Robinson, Parliamentarian; Soror Teresa Floyd, Chaplain; and Sorors Phillis Kirk and Robbin Goldsmith, members. On November 14, 1993, three recent graduates transferred into the alumnae chapter---Sorors Carmelia Johnson and Bridget Austin, graduates of Lander University in Greenwood, and Soror Jennifer Hope Robinson, a graduate of Winthrop University in Rock Hill. With a membership of thirteen by the end of 1993, Eta Sigma Sigma emerged as a staple in the Greenville community. Since its inception, the Eta Sigma Sigma Chapter strives to meet the challenges of the day and continues to grow through Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service.
