Since 2003, National DNA Day has brought students, educators, and the general public together to celebrate the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003 and the discovery of the double helix in 1953.

As we look to mark one of the seminal discoveries in life sciences, the research and education communities have also started to use DNA Day to reflect on how genetics and genomics impact society more broadly. From reframing how research is performed and who is included, to contemplating the ethical considerations of gene editing, DNA Day continues to give us an opportunity "to innovate, collaborate and discover the promise of our shared humanity and connection to the natural world."

Happy DNA Day!

Here's some great info on the direction that some entrepreneurs may be directing the recycling business! This is what we need in the world; creative new ways to think about the problem!

Scientists are looking for new ways to recycle plastic in an endless loop, so it never becomes waste. Now, revolutionary technology is advancing the movement.

Thank you to all of the Hard-Working Volunteers this semester! You did an incredible job of ridding trash from the river.
Quick breakdown of the sweep:
• 2,963 pieces of litter were picked up with plastics and glass bottles/fragments comprising 86% of the total number (31% was plastics and 55% was glass).
• 75% of the plastic that was picked up was single-use plastics (food wrappers & film; retail plastic bags; non-retail plastic bags; styrofoam; plastic bottles; plastic caps & lids; plastic straws & wrappers; plastic utensils, cups, plates, etc.; and balloons). That percentage is probably higher because a number of the items that were put down as "Other Plastics" and some of the contents in the 6 full trash bags that were picked up would likely be considered single-use plastics.

Please consider downloading the South Carolina Aquarium Citizen Science app and use the Litter-Free Digital Journal to record any litter you pick up any time, any where in SC. You can provide valuable information regarding our targets to try and prevent more litter in the waterways.
