Mississippi Ranks Among Highest in Nation for STD Rates Despite Recent Decline

A new national report shows Mississippi has seen a 22% drop in sexually transmitted disease rates between 2019 and 2023. However, the state still ranks third highest in the nation, with nearly 1% of the population infected.

According to the CDC, approximately 11,900 people in Mississippi are living with HIV, and more than 17% are unaware of their status. The state also has the fifth-highest HIV diagnosis rate nationally, and over one in five newly diagnosed individuals do not receive care within one month.

The report cites high uninsured rates and lack of Medicaid expansion as contributing factors. Free and low-cost STD and HIV testing services remain available through county health departments and clinics across the state.

Today is World AIDS Day.
As a community health peer, I stand with every person affected by HIV — past, present, and future. We honor the lives lost, uplift those living with HIV, and continue fighting for education, access, prevention, and stigma-free care.

Health is a community effort, and together we can end the stigma, end the silence, and move toward an HIV-free future. ❤️🧡💛

Know your status. Protect your health. Support your community.
