Local advocacy group seeks National Wildlife Federation certification for Paris Mountain
The Paris Mountain Wildlife Protectors, a team of resident members from Mountainside Garden Club , have registered Paris Mountain to become a National Wildlife Federation’s Community Wildlife Habitat.
In order to achieve their goal, Paris Mountain residents will need to make their yards welcoming to local wildlife by planting trees and shrubs, adding a water source, and use little to no insecticide or herbicides, said Mountainside Garden Club VP and Paris Mountain Wildlife Protectors member Mary Lou Jones.
We feel so blessed that we are already a natural habitat where you see deer, birds and sometimes black bears, The Paris Mountain Wildlife Protectors first became involved with the NWF’s program after South Carolina Wildlife representative Jay Keck challenged them to get their community involved. “I had invited Jay Keck to be a speaker at a Friends of the Park program,” said Jones. He challenged us to become a certified wildlife habitat, so we got started earning points for the program. We’re about 3/4 to our goal,” Once Paris Mountain completes its certification, it will join more than 205,000 Certified Wildlife Habitat sites across the country.
