Good company, perfect weather, and an even greater impact!

Our 4th Annual SCAA Oyster Roast brought together 70 attendees for an evening of great food, live music, and meaningful connections, all in support of the future of South Carolina’s aggregates industry!

Thanks to the generosity of our attendees, donors, and supporters, our live auction raised more than $7,000 for the SCAA Scholarship Foundation!

These funds will help provide educational opportunities for students pursuing careers in our industry and support the next generation of South Carolina’s workforce.

We are just days away from the 4th Annual SCAA Oyster Roast on Thursday, October 8, at Up on the Roof in downtown Greenville. We’re looking forward to an evening of great food, live music, networking and plenty of time to connect with the SCAA community while taking in the views of the city and Reedy River.

But this night is about more than a great evening together. All Oyster Roast proceeds support the SCAA Scholarship Foundation, helping to provide educational opportunities for students pursuing careers in aggregate and related fields while investing in the future of our industry.

The goal is simple: everyone goes home safe.

That mindset was at the heart of our latest SCAA Safety & HR Committee meeting, hosted by Martin Marietta Calhoun Sand.

We brought together Associate and Producer members to share ideas, discuss safety priorities and look ahead to the goals shaping our work in 2027.

A special thank you to Chris Smith with for an engaging presentation on fall protection and workplace safety. Opportunities like these allow us to learn from one another and continue strengthening safety practices across the industry.

We’re proud of the collaboration happening within this committee and look forward to carrying that momentum into 2027.

Because safety isn’t just a goal. It’s a commitment we share.

As Workforce Development Month comes to a close, we are celebrating a year of building connections, creating opportunities and investing in the future of South Carolina's aggregates industry.

Workforce development is about more than filling jobs. It's about creating awareness, opening doors and showing students the opportunities available in an industry they may have never considered.

Throughout 2026, SCAA, our members and workforce partners have worked together through quarry tours, career fairs, educator outreach, scholarships and hands-on industry experiences to connect students and educators with our industry.

And we're not finished yet. More quarry tours, career fairs and workforce outreach events are planned through the end of the year, including our new SCAA Industry Career Fair on December 2 at the Annual Workshop & Exhibit in Columbia.

None of this happens without our members and partners. Thank you to every Producer and Associate Member, educator and workforce partner who has opened a quarry, brought out equipment, volunteered their time, shared their career story or helped us connect with students across South Carolina.

Every tour, conversation, scholarship and first look inside a quarry is an opportunity to change a student's perception of what a career in our industry can look like.

Together, we're building more than roads, homes and communities.
We're building South Carolina's future workforce.

Stop #3 in our Fall Quarry Tour Series!

On September 22, Vulcan Materials Company’s Liberty Quarry welcomed 100 10th and 11th grade students from the Construction Program at Pickens County Career and Technology Center for a hands-on look at the aggregates industry.

Our first group braved a rainy morning and still made it down into the pit for a firsthand look at quarry operations.

Throughout the day, students learned about the many moving pieces that keep a quarry running and explored the wide range of career opportunities available in the aggregates industry.

One of the highlights was hearing directly from current SCAA scholarship recipients enrolled in the CAT ThinkBIG program at Florence-Darlington Technical College. Not only did they get to share their experiences and career paths with the students, but they also got to experience a quarry firsthand for the very first time! It was a great opportunity for everyone to learn more about the industry and the many paths available within it.

A special thank you to everyone who helped make the day possible : our SCAA Workforce Development Chair and Co-Chair, Emily Talbert and Salley Lewis; Jennifer Woody with South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce; Tony Burton and the Vulcan Liberty team; Ron Hunter with Blanchard Machinery; Jeremy McCreary with Orica; and the crew from Herc Rentals.

It takes strong partnerships across our industry to create experiences like these for the next generation, and we’re grateful to everyone who continues to invest in our future workforce!

From aggregates to asphalt and concrete, our industries are connected - and this week, we brought our voices together on Capitol Hill.

SCAA joined members of the SC Asphalt Pavement Association in Washington, D.C., for National Stone Sand & Gravel Association Legislative & Policy Forum and a joint Hill Day with National Asphalt Pavement Association and National Ready Mixed Concrete Association.

Although the Congressional House was not in session, our group had meaningful conversations with staff in both House and Senate offices. We shared why a strong surface transportation reauthorization bill with reliable, recurring funding matters to our members, along with the need for support with permitting reform and workforce development. These priorities affect the work our industries do every day.

Congressman Russell Fry’s office also arranged a private tour of the U.S. Capitol for our group. We thank his team for the opportunity and for their time with us.

Thank you to our members and industry partners who traveled to Washington and helped make the case for policies that support the people and materials behind our nation’s infrastructure. We’ll continue bringing their experience and priorities to the conversations that shape our industry’s future.

Fall Quarry Tour Series Stop #2!

On September 10, we welcomed 100 eighth-grade students from Spartanburg District 5 to Vulcan Materials Company’s Lyman Quarry for a firsthand look at the aggregates industry!

Students went into the pit, toured the quarry, and got to see the scale of a working operation up close. They then participated in a Touch-a-Truck experience with Blanchard Machinery, learned about the blasting process from Orica, and explored education and career pathways with Spartanburg Community College.

A huge thank you to Gary Maynor, Jeffrey Crozier, Ron Hunter, Rodney Satterfield, Orica, Spartanburg Community College, Spartanburg District 5, and Sara Neil-Spencer with SCDEW for helping make this experience possible!

And a special shoutout to our Workforce Development Chair and Co-Chair, Emily Talbert and Salley Lewis, for their incredible commitment to creating meaningful, hands-on experiences that introduce students to the opportunities within our industry.

The SCAA Oyster Roast is about more than a great night out. It’s about investing in what comes next.
