Feeding the Spirit

Feeding the Spirit Feeding the Spirit Every individual deserves to have food and safe shelter. Sadly, not everyone in our neighborhood has access to these basic needs.

Mission Statement:

Helping people break through barriers of poverty, homelessness and hunger through crisis management and transitional resources while instilling hope and dignity. You can become part of the solution by donating your time to come and volunteer at a weekly meal and/or by donating money to ensure that Feeding the Spirit can continue to provide the services to families and individu

als in need. Those in need receive assistance in the following ways:

Offsetting copays and medication costs; subsidizing utility payments to avoid service shut-offs; providing pet food and hygiene items; supplying bus passes for transportation; securing household items, furniture, groceries, toys, books, and infant clothing; and offering community scholarship funds.

Signs, signs, everywhere a sign ... about Jaffre's Restaurant & Bar & Six Pack preparing tonight's meal, about Feeding the Spirit sponsoring it, about the Mobility Clinic being offered by Hill University physical therapy students, about a summer meal program being offered through the Westmoreland Food Bank (thanks to Kim and Cindy from Otterbein United Methodist Church (Greensburg, PA) for passing out flyers). And if Jim had a sign next to his work station it would say 'One Man PetFoodBagging Band'!

Those are a few of the scenes from tonight's meal distribution of 320 meals and toilet paper for all. Thanks to Hank from St. Florian for the TP donation, to Karen D for homemade chocolate cookies, At Waterworks for the lunches, Giant Eagle and Christian Layman Corps for baked goods, Ninth Life Rescue Center for dog and cat food, our 78 guests, our terrific volunteers who scurry around behind the scenes for days to make it all happen. It was a perfect evening in every way ...

Things were absolutely rockin’ and rollin’ at the FTS ‘hot corner’ last evening as the very organized and very busy volunteers distributed 368 meals PLUS pet food, diapers, baked goods, laundry detergent, dish soap and kindness. Out the walk-up site, we greeted 35 guests and and additional 46 folks via the drive through.

Feeding the Spirit sponsored the meal prepared by Metz Culinary Management. Shout out to Chris Jones who not only delivered the meals but helped unload an SUV-full of food that came to FTS via Christian Layman Corps. We also shared box lunches from Morelands At Waterworks, and appreciate their steadfast support.

Matt and team from Cashdollar Insurance Agency Inc - State Farm arrived with loads of toiletries, cleaning supplies AND a cash donation to FTS (meet these generous folk below). Can I hear a ‘Woo Hoo’ and thanks??!!! Then a second donation arrived, collected by Lutheran Church of Our Saviour in North Huntingdon. All these supplies come in the door one week and get sent out to be shared every week thereafter.

From the FTS Garden Team, there were tomato plants and from George aka Banana Man … hmmm, bananas 🙄🙃. And all departed with full hearts!

It was a beautiful night in the garden!

Twenty-seven tomato plants are now settled into rich compost soil, cucumber seeds have been sown and will be sprouting soon, and our second batch of romaine lettuce will be taking root shortly. Meanwhile, the beets, peas, and beans are already looking strong and healthy!

We even have extra tomato plants to share with volunteers and our Thursday night meal guests.

Our gardening crew is fierce, but we’re always looking for more helping hands. It’s amazing to see what can grow when a community comes together!

Our Feeding the Spirit garden is growing and we are learning!

We started many of these plants from seed, and now they are beginning to go into the ground — but we need your help to keep it growing and thriving!

We are looking for volunteers to help with planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting throughout the season. No experience is needed, just a willingness to lend a hand.

If you would like to volunteer, we would love to have you join us! Drop us a message or email us so we can get you on our volunteer list!

'What happened to spring?' More than one of tonight's guests arrived with this question for us. Our reply? 'Don't know about spring but summer will be here on Saturday 😎!

Tonight's meals was sponsored by Feeding the Spirit and prepared by Culinary Management. Thanks as always to Morelands At Waterworks for those ever-popular box lunches, Giant Eagle, Ninth Life Rescue Center and 's Way Market for their food donations (human, feline and canine!). Welcome to Seton Hill Physician's Assistant students, Baine, Hannah and Alexa who were kept busy giving out deodorant and bar soap.

Check out a view of the calm before the storm, Chris from
Metz Culinary Management keeping the food packing team entertained, long time volunteer Andrew with his prom date Jordan, Nate and Phyllis hanging out in spite of the chill.
