October is National Fire Prevention Month, and the Hempfield Township Fire Department brought some extra excitement to Clairview School with a special visit!

Students got an up-close look at the fire trucks and equipment and met Deputy Fire Chief Ben and volunteer firefighters Bryan and Greg. The firefighters even shared how firefighting runs through their families, with generations serving their communities!

As students explored each truck and learned what it takes to fight a fire, one student’s assistive device said it best: “I like fire trucks!”

“We love to do this for the kids,” the firefighters shared.

A huge thank-you to the Hempfield Township Fire Department for all you do to keep our community safe and for bringing so many smiles to Clairview today!

The inaugural Clairview Fall Festival was in full swing today!

From hand-painting and pulling tractors to exploring the pumpkin patch, adaptive apple bobbing, corn sensory pool fun, and so much more, students had plenty of ways to enjoy the season!

With lessons of friendship, the afternoon also gave students some indoor time to watch Toy Story 5.

So many smiles, so much fun, and plenty of opportunities to play, explore, and enjoy the fall season together!

WIU staff enjoyed an afternoon at Willowbrook Mini Golf & Driving Range yesterday for our latest wellness activity. Teams of coworkers hit the course, enjoyed some “turn dawgs” 🌭 and drinks, and made the most of the beautiful fall weather.

Congratulations to our top-scorers, Jake and Cam, and Hole-in-One winner, Angela!

A little movement and the chance to connect with coworkers made for a great way to recharge!

Did You Know? WIU7 supports students and educators across every stage of learning - from early intervention through high school.

🌱 1,058 children are currently in the Preschool Early Intervention referral-through-service process, including 759 active IEPs across 205 preschool settings.

📚 Clairview School opened the year with 102 enrolled students, with additional referrals underway.

🤝 Student Services is strengthening programs and services through regional collaboration and a comprehensive procedures manual.

💡 TaC continues to support districts in PBIS, I-MTSS, specialized classrooms, inclusive practices, low-incidence supports and evidence-based literacy.

And preparations are already underway for the next Early Intervention verification in May 2027.

This is just a snapshot of the work happening every day to support students, families, educators and school districts across Westmoreland County.

Teams from six Westmoreland County school districts and the Eastern Westmoreland Career and Technology Center gathered at the WIU for our MTSS Network session.

Facilitated by Dr. Mindy Bramer of the WIU TaC team and Dr. Diane Fierle of Curriculum and Professional Learning Services, the session gave participants an opportunity to learn directly from colleagues putting MTSS into practice in their schools.

🏫 Hempfield Area School District shared its work to create greater consistency and equity in Tier II and Tier III decision-making, including its K–8 Literacy Decision Tree.

📊 Grandview Elementary in Derry Area School District shared Tier I practices, including “In and Out” data review sessions that help teachers identify student strengths and needs and determine appropriate supports.

A special thank you to Heather Bungard and Dr. Sarah Proudfit from Hempfield Area, and Milissa McLain, Jennifer Faas and Tara Laughlin from Derry Area, for opening up their work and sharing practical resources and lessons learned with colleagues across the county.

We’re grateful for a morning centered on collaboration, reflection and continuous improvement — and we look forward to continuing the conversation at our next MTSS Network session.

💧 From the creek to the classroom, real-world experiences are bringing science to life.

Educators from multiple districts and agencies gathered at the Westmoreland Conservation District for a day-long training focused on Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE).

Hosted by Miranda Crotsley, Program Director at Jennings Environmental Education Center, and Julie Kolano, WIU STEM Curriculum Coordinator, the training gave educators practical ways to connect classroom learning with local watershed ecosystems, environmental stewardship and real-world scientific inquiry—all while addressing Environmental Literacy and Sustainability (ELS) within Pennsylvania’s STEELS standards.

Participants explored local watershed ecosystems, collaborated with colleagues across districts and developed ideas for bringing MWEE lessons, community partnerships and environmental action projects back to their classrooms.

When students can explore, investigate, and connect with the environment around them, science becomes more than a lesson—it becomes an experience. 🌱💧

What if knowing what to say could help save a life?

The WIU is hosting Ray of Hope for a two-day safeTALK training—an internationally evidence-based su***de alertness program that helps participants recognize the signs of su***de, use active listening skills, and connect people with support and resources.

This session is also a train-the-trainer opportunity, equipping nine participants with the skills and knowledge to bring safeTALK training to others throughout our community.

When more people know what to look for, how to listen, and where to turn for help, we strengthen our community’s ability to support one another.
