Two days ago, Wednesday, May 27th, Westmoreland Walks, Inc. board member, Jessica Light, presented our 5th $5000 🎀 Pink Ribbon Scholarship. 🎀 The scholarship was awarded to Austin Beck from Kiski Area High School. Through his transcripts, Austin demonstrates his commitment to academic excellence. Through his athletics, he shows his affinity for leadership and a camaraderie with all of his teammates.

In his application essay, Austin shows his devotion to home and family life. He describes that he has learned true strength is not hiding emotions or pretending to be ok, it is about being there even when things are going bad and still being patient, caring, and positive. He goes on to say that life is about learning to be ok, even when you're not.

Austin described his life prior to his mother's breast cancer diagnosis as "vanilla". During his family's journey, he learned strength and what true love really was.

Saturday, May 23rd, Westmoreland Walks was the charity selected to receive the Live! Casino Super Bingo proceeds. We are stunned!!! We are grateful to Live! Casino, every player, and staff member who participated in this amazing endeavor. THANK YOU! Your generosity will help so many.

Yesterday morning, Grace Crawford, a 2026 Belle Vernon Area senior, was awarded one of our five $5,000 🎀 Pink Ribbon Scholarships,🎀 commemorating Westmoreland Walks, Inc.'s 25th year! Grace's mom battled breast cancer.

In Grace's application, she shared how her family experience with breast cancer has shaped her to appreciate every moment in life and to volunteer at New York Fashion Week for a clothing line specifically designed for cancer patients, all while maintaining academic excellence, supporting her family through tough times, and achieving her own goals.
Grace will be attending Hofstra University.

Board member Rebecca Harhai presented the award. Rebecca was the 2014 Pink Ribbon Scholarship recipient when she graduated from Belle Vernon Area.

Last evening, Westmoreland Walks, Inc. board members, Cricket Rizzo and Irene Crawford, had the true honor and pleasure of presenting the third $5000 🎀Pink Ribbon Scholarship🎀. They attended the Norwin High School Honors and Awards Ceremony for the Class of 2026.

The awardee, Jonathan Holland, could not have been more appreciative and gracious! His mom was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer on Thanksgiving Day 2017. In 2021, her condition took a turn for the worse and she passed away on November 25th, Thanksgiving Day. Jonathan was 13.

He stated so eloquently in his essay that, "breast cancer has had more of an impact on my life than any other thing.". He says that, "if there is any silver lining, it is that those events have led me to find what I want to do with my life and have motivated me to make that future happen.". John is going to school for Biochemistry with a focus on cancer research.

UPDATE: It was originally noted that Jonathan planned to attend The University of Pittsburgh. John will now be attending Northeastern University, a top BioChem school. At the time of his scholarship application, he hadn't heard back from them (they have a tough 5-6% acceptance rate). He was accepted! Go, John!🎉

"Through my mother, I have seen how cancer can affect an individual and know what it is like for it to take a loved one. My mother's breast cancer diagnosis has and forever will change my life, but hopefully, I can use my experience with it to help fight against cancer in the future."

On Wednesday, May 20th, Westmoreland Walks, Inc. board members, Deborah D. Weinstein and Muriel Paulson, had the honor of presenting Leocadia Branche with a $5000 🎀Pink Ribbon Scholarship🎀. Leocadia is a graduating senior at Derry Area High School and will be attending St. Vincent College. She is an amazing young women with a strong mother. Leocadia stood beside her mom throughout her mom’s journey with breast cancer. She continues to support her. Congratulations 🎉 to Leocadia!
