What’s the difference between aid and transformation? Instead of saying ‘we built 1,000 houses,’ we say ‘we taught 1,000 people to build houses in Liberia, enabling them to construct 100,000 houses.’

Seeds of Freedom focuses on infrastructure and training, ensuring farming experts and builders thrive in Liberia. “We didn’t do it. They did it. That’s the dream.”

This is sustainable missions for the 21st century — empowerment that multiplies, not charity that runs out.

Seeds of Freedom: A pathway to freedom from poverty.

Change in Liberia has been slow despite efforts from missionaries and donors. The Church needs to rethink its role in community transformation, as demonstrated by the Seeds of Freedom team.

In Bonga, Liberia, the community is eager to engage. "We just need to keep stepping forward in faith — and the Church needs to take it on."

The Seeds of Freedom series showcases a rice and cassava farm in Liberia, serving as a model for sustainable community restoration through faith.

There’s a stump in the field that needs to be pulled out. But you can’t just pull it — you have to give the root systems a full year to die before they come up.

That’s the reality of building a rice farm in Liberia from thick forest.
And while all of that is happening — the workers are planting around the obstacles, weeding by hand, and somehow growing a pretty nice looking crop.

“If I drove past with a tractor, I’d just keep driving. But they’re doing it.”
This is what real transformation looks like — not a shortcut, but a process. Step by step, season by season.

🌿 20 ACRES CLEARED. 20 MORE TO GO.

Straight forest. Untouched for 100, 200 years. Great natural resources — but undeveloped.

This is what the work actually looks like before a single grain of rice is harvested.

🌱 Every acre cleared is a step toward freedom.

“What do they have those jugs of — is that honey?”
“No. They’re reselling gasoline.”

That’s the moment it hit. Doing the math on what they were buying it for and reselling it at — that’s like no profit whatsoever. That’s a bad deal.
Literally making a dollar or two a day.
And the painful part? These people are motivated. They want to move themselves up. But they don’t have the means.

So what happens when you’re trapped with no real options?
Sometimes the only avenue that appears is drugs.
This is what poverty without hope looks like. And it’s exactly why the Liberia rice farm project exists — not to hand out more resources that run out, but to give people a real path forward.
🌱 — because a seed in the ground outlasts any shipment.

"A lot of times in missions, people are doing very worthwhile things—building houses, providing medical care, food, clothing.”

But there’s always been a problem.
You can provide the material goods, but eventually that runs out. You have to keep funding it, keep fueling it.
And it’s really not going to sustainably bring an improved quality of life. People will remain in poverty.

Over years in the church, this pattern has repeated: excellent missionary work, but areas remain in cycles of poverty.

So the team asked: what would really break the cycle?
They went back to basics. Back to how quality of life is actually built.
Farming.

This project redefines the missionary mindset — from “we want to help” to “we want to teach sustainable life.” And it started with a rice farm in Liberia.

🌱 This is what actually means.

What does a 1960s psychology experiment have to do with poverty and addiction in Liberia? More than you'd think.
In this clip from the Ask CCA podcast, Dr. Tom Weil explains the Rat City Study — and how it reshapes the way Seeds of Freedom approaches rehabilitation, farming, and community transformation in West Africa.
When people are stuck in a cage with nothing meaningful to do, they reach for whatever numbs the pain. Seeds of Freedom is building a way out — through agriculture, dignity, and faith.

We often think of "development" as tech and skyscrapers, but history shows that you can't build a nation without a plate of food.
From the battlefields of WWI to the thriving cities of Europe, agriculture is the foundation that supports everything else.
If we want to help poor nations rise from the ground up, the first step is simple: learn to grow food and get really good at it.
