The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County has awarded 10 grants totaling more than $180,000 to Westmoreland County nonprofits working in areas of the county where a high percentage of the population lives in poverty.

“These grants are designed to help organizations respond to urgent needs and meaningful opportunities in Westmoreland County,” said CFWC Executive Director McCrae Martino. “By investing in programs that support individuals and families facing financial hardship and strengthen the communities where they live, we can help build a more vibrant, resilient county.”

The 10 organizations receiving grants are:

Legacies are built through collaboration.

At our recent event, Amy Razem and Sara Swaney from the Foundation were joined by Christine Brown Murphy and Colleen Bratkovich from Zacharia Brown & Bratkovich PA to explore how financial advisors, attorneys and Foundation staff can work together to create coordinated estate and charitable planning for charitably minded clients.

The Pittsburgh Foundation's development and donor services team is available to help your clients seeking to create philanthropic legacies develop their financial, estate and charitable goals. “I have always been passionate about mission- and purpose-driven work."

Ryan and Jolene Naugle live lives of service to the Westmoreland County community. Ryan is a financial advisor at Advice & Planning Services in Youngwood and Jolene works at LifeChoices, a nonprofit organization that operates MyChoice Medical Clinics in Kittanning, Indiana, Butler and Greensburg.

"As the Westmoreland County Community Outreach Specialist for LifeChoices, I focus on outreach, community engagement, and, most importantly, building meaningful relationships throughout the community," said Jolene.

As an advisor, Ryan introduces his clients to the benefits of charitable giving, develop plans and – teaming with CFWC – point them at the right nonprofits that are doing the work well.

“Joining the Visionaries was a big help and got us acquainted with many nonprofits in the county. Being active in the community helps to start conversations and getting them to attend events really helps,” he said.

“Ryan and I both come from strong faith backgrounds and are deeply committed to living out our faith in our community. We have always believed that there are three things you can do with money: save, spend, and give — and that all three should have a place in your life. Visionaries was another intentional way to focus our giving was something we welcomed," Jolene added.

“I believe the Visionaries program is a wonderful way to make community involvement and giving more accessible to someone who may not know where to begin, whom to support or how to get involved. At the same time, it can be an extension of the giving someone is already doing — a way to come alongside others, pool resources and multiply the impact of each gift.”

Nonprofits need practical tools to build resilience and adapt to uncertainty.

On Friday morning, The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County and Elevate NP brought nonprofit leaders together for a Scenario Planning Workshop at Westmoreland County Community College, where they had dedicated time and space to make connections and strengthen their capacity to navigate change.

"It’s comforting to know that Tracy's legacy of working with individuals with special needs is carrying on in the work of others with the help of this fund.”

In 2023, after the sudden loss of his wife, Tracy Eberhardt, her husband, Jon, and their daughters, Taylor and Danika, created the Tracy S. Eberhardt Memorial Fund to honor her and the more than two decades of dedication to special education and support special needs programs in Westmoreland County schools and organizations.

In a little more than two years, the fund has issued 15 grants totaling more than $35,000, including school districts that serve individuals with special needs like Belle Vernon, Hempfield and Latrobe. The grants were used to acquire equipment, materials and services that will help students for years to come.

Other organizations who have benefited from the fund include: the Stoneybrook Foundation, which provides therapeutic horseback riding for special needs individuals; the Miracle League of Western PA, which conducts sports leagues for individuals with special needs; and Team Friends – Westmoreland County, which offers programs for adults with special needs.

The fund also seeds a scholarship at Seton Hill University for a junior or senior student from Westmoreland County majoring in special education. Jon hopes that the scholarship will help a student that shares Tracy’s passion for special education and that her spirit will live on with young teachers. The first scholarship recipient, Lynsey Breth from Mt. Pleasant, graduated this past spring and began her career as a preschool special education teacher in August.

“It is great to see others helping in the community, no matter what the cause that person feels is important to them,” Jon Eberhardt said. “In our case, it is heartwarming to see the support that Tracy’s memorial fund has received and it’s comforting to know that her legacy of working with individuals with special needs is carrying on in the work of others with the help of this fund.”

CFWC hosted a recent board member orientation session for nonprofit boards at the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit.

Matt Dooley (mattdooley.com) shared vital information and facilitated a discussion about about nonprofit missions, visions and values, as well as the financial and legal responsibilities of board members, and committee and board meeting structure.

The Arc of Indiana County empowers individuals with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays by identifying barriers, building partnerships and finding positive solutions that allow them to be seen, heard, accommodated and included. Its Spirit of Food program provides participants the opportunity to learn and socialize while addressing food insecurity and accessibility barriers to healthy food.

To ensure this work continues, the Indiana County Endowment awarded a $4,000 grant to the Arc of Indiana County. This funding will help cover kitchen supplies and food boxes so participants can make the recipes after class and feed their families.

The Indiana County Endowment launched a fundraising campaign this summer to increase its grantmaking to vital programs like the Arc. The goal is to raise at least $25,000, which will trigger a matching donation of $25,000 by a generous individual.

The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County invited donors to come together at the The Westmoreland Museum of American Art for a night celebrating philanthropy, partnership and community transformation

We explored the popular exhibition "Play Ball! The Art of George Sosnak," and viewed the new temporary exhibition "Ansel Adams: Majestic Lands," which features more than 40 works from the iconic photographer.

Thank you to the Westmoreland Museum of American Art for a wonderful night where guests learned about the Museum's innovative programming, educational outreach and community impact.

CFWC Staff was happy to attend the milestone Time Capsule Ceremony celebrating The Palace Theatre. Elected officials recognized the importance of the Palace and joined community members, volunteers, and community leaders in celebrating its incredible legacy.

To honor the Palace’s 100th anniversary, a time capsule was placed inside the ticket booth, to be opened 100 years from now — giving the community of 2126 a chance to look back and see how we celebrated this remarkable milestone. ❤️
