It's important to remember that fireworks are explosives and can be unpredictable. Even small firecrackers, smoke bombs and sparklers can cause serious burns and other injuries. Make sure you always supervise children around fireworks and leave the igniting to adults.

Today Safe Kids Kiowa County hosted an Arrive Alive Event for high school students from USD 422 - Kiowa County Mavericks and South Central Schools - USD 300.

Ahead of Prom we wanted to educate young drivers on the dangers of driving while impaired, either from alcohol or drug use. To accomplish this we used activities that require lots of coordination along with Drunk Busters Impairment Goggles. We had googles in various strengths of alcohol usage, ma*****na usage, and drug usage.

We used the goggles as part of our outdoor golf cart course, as well as for knockout, co****le, giant Jenga, cup stacking, and some field sobriety testing.

Special thanks to all of our volunteers from the Greensburg Police Department, Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, USD 422, Kiowa County Health Department, City of Greensburg, Kiowa County Emergency Management, and Kansas Department of Education.

Today Safe Kids Kiowa County hosted a hands-on education event for junior high students from both USD 422 - Kiowa County Mavericks and Haviland Grade School about the effects of alcohol and ma*****na.

Using Drunk Busters Goggles to simulate the effects of both alcohol and ma*****na on the body, students played different games, operated a pedal cart through a course, and a golf cart through a course to better understand how these substances affect their bodies.

Before the start of summer we held a safety event for Grade School and Junior High students today.

In the morning we taught the Junior High students about ATV, Off-Road Vehicle, and Golf Cart Safety. In addition to learning the basics we put the students through a simulated road course so they learn to follow the rules of the road. After they got the hang of the basic driving we added some divided attention tasks, distracted driving, and “Drunk Goggles” to simulate the effects of driving under the influence. Several cones lost their lives today and a few volunteers had to dive out of the way of our junior high drivers.

In the afternoon we did a Bike Rodeo with the grade school kids from both Greensburg and Haviland. Through a grant for Safe Kids we were able to provide helmets to students who didn’t have one. Students learned the basic rules of the road, bike safety, and got to put their skills through multiple different practical stations and obstacles.

Additionally during the Bike Rodeo students who brought their own bike had it looked at by a local bike expert and small repairs were made for them.

Special thanks to all of the volunteers who made today possible!
