Strong Able Youth Speaking Out (SaySo) is a statewide association of youth & young adults ages 14-26+

SaySo, Strong Able Youth Speaking Out, is a statewide association of youth aged 14 to 24 who are or have been in the out-of-home care system that is based in North Carolina. This includes all types of substitute care, including foster care, group homes, and mental health placements. Our mission is to work to improve the substitute care system by educating the community, speaking out about needed changes, and providing support to youth who are or have been in substitute care.

🌟 Preparing Youth for the REAL WORLD! 🌟
What an incredible opportunity for our youth to experience what life after graduation can really look like! From stepping into their desired careers and learning how to manage a salary, to navigating housing, bills, insurance, car payments, groceries, and everyday expenses, they were able to experience real-life financial responsibilities firsthand.
They learned the importance of saving for the unexpected, understanding debt and credit, making smart financial decisions, and planning for the future, with the guidance of some amazing speakers and community leaders. 💰📚
Our youth also had the opportunity to select professional clothing to prepare for future jobs and interviews, while learning about the importance of making safe choices—including never drinking and driving. 👔🚗
Experiences like this give young people the confidence, knowledge, and tools they need to make informed decisions as they enter adulthood.

The real world is full of opportunities and challenges. Preparing our youth for both makes all the difference. 🌎✨

October is Foster Youth Voice Month, and we are honoring Christian Anderson, a SaySo member who passed earlier this month.

Christian was a true advocate. He was a Jim Casey Young Fellow, a student at Livingstone College, and collected and donated over 100 hygiene kits to support SaySo’s distribution at our upcoming Make a Difference Day event.

Today, we take a moment to celebrate his life and the legacy he leaves behind. He was wise, humorous, deeply committed to the work of advocacy, and involved with several organizations, including his own nonprofit.

He will be missed, but never forgotten. 🤍

SaySo was excited to attend the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative Network Convening and 25th Anniversary Celebration in Hawaii where 22 jurisdictions were represented!

The theme, Honoring Our History and Forging Our Future, acknowledged the longevity and impact of the Jim Casey Initiative. It allowed us to reflect on what we’ve learned, consider our work going forward and recommit to contributions that make a difference, so that every young person has the relationships, resources and opportunities they need to thrive in adulthood.
