CWS and the Greater Greensboro CROP Hunger Walk Steering Committee are saddened to share the passing of one of our longest and most faithful supporters, Mary Belle Gilbert. Her celebration of life service was held on Friday, May 1st.

One of Mary Belle’s favorite stories to share about the Walk was that her parents helped start the Greater Greensboro CROP Hunger Walk. It was their legacy and she proudly made it her own. For many years, Mary Belle joined thousands of Greensboro residents walking in solidarity with neighbors who must walk miles each day for food and clean water.

Last October, Mary Belle participated in her final Walk at the 45th Annual Greater Greensboro CROP Hunger Walk. It was a picture-perfect day, and she was filled with joy. With a proud smile, her daughter Lynne guided her along the route at Friends Home West, where she lived. Mary Belle lived by the simple belief that we are all our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. Through her dedication to the CROP Hunger Walk, she helped ensure that neighbors in Greensboro and around the world would have food, shelter, safety, and dignity. She truly was a Hunger Champion.

Today we celebrate Mary Belle’s life and the extraordinary legacy of love and service she leaves behind.

Rest in perfect peace, Mary Belle. You will never be forgotten.

In 2020, because of COVID, the Greater Greensboro CROP Hunger Walk was a virtual event. Mary Belle Gilbert, a longtime supporter of the Walk recorded a video inviting residents in Greensboro to participate by walking where they were most comfortable and continuing to donate to support the event.

We are saddened by Mary Belle's passing last week and send prayers to her family. She will be sorely missed. Rest peacefully our dear friend and faithful supporter.

Her legacy will live on this year as we celebrate the 46th Greater Greensboro CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 4th. Please join us by walking and donating to support this event that is helping to transform lives throughout Guilford County and around the world.
