Tails of the Unwanted is a 501c3 registered public charity. We are a foster based rescue and do not have a facility. We rescue dogs from rural shelters in North Carolina, vet them and find them forever homes. We adopt to qualified homes

Adoptable Moe update! His foster mom says he is ready for sweater weather! How cute is this guy?!

Hi! My name is Moe , and I’m the sweetest, goofiest boy you’ll ever meet! At just 1 year old , I’m still a puppy with lots of love, energy, and personality to share.

Here’s a little about me:

I LOVE to play! Tug, fetch, rope toys—you name it! I’ll even bring you my favorite rope toy to let you know it’s playtime.

I’m a handsome guy with beautiful reddish-fawn coloring, stunning eyes, and the cutest ears you’ve ever seen.

I sleep quietly in my crate at night and settle nicely when tethered in the house. I even enjoy relaxing to soothing music! I’d make a great work-from-home buddy, but I’m also comfortable being crated when you need to leave.

I’m not reactive on walks around dogs, cars, strollers, or other distractions. I can be a little strong on leash at first, but I settle down as the walk continues, especially in quieter environments.

I’d love a fenced yard or an active family because playing and exploring are some of my favorite things!

I’m dog-friendly and enjoy having playful canine companions who like to romp as much as I do.

I’m affectionate, lovable, and convinced I’m the perfect lap dog—all 55 pounds of me!

Sometimes I get so excited to see my people that I jump up to say hello. I’m still learning that four paws on the floor is the best way to greet people, so I’d do best with older children while I work on my manners.

I’m a smart boy who loves treats, wants to please, and enjoys learning. With a little guidance and consistency, I’ll make an amazing companion.

I’m just looking for a family who will love me, help me continue learning, and let me be the happy puppy I’m meant to be.

🌈💔 Rest peacefully, Princess Koko — formerly known as Chrissy. 💔🌈

We were notified that one of our previous adoptees has left this world. We must now say goodbye to a very special girl. Once known as Chrissy, she became Princess Koko — a name that fit her perfectly and a reminder of how loved and cherished she was.

Her journey may have come to an end, but the love she gave and the memories she leaves behind will never be forgotten. Every dog deserves to know love, kindness, and a safe place to call home, and Koko was so much more than a name or a rescue story. She was herself — precious, beautiful, and worthy of being loved.

🚨🐾 POLLY NEEDS A FOSTER OR ADOPTER BY 10/27 🐾🚨

Polly is a sweet, affectionate girl who is looking for an experienced foster or forever home that understands her needs and is committed to helping her succeed. ❤️

Polly recently completed a two-week board-and-train, and her trainer shared some really positive observations:

💗 Affectionate & loving — Polly loves belly rubs, wiggles when greeted, and is comfortable being handled anywhere, including her mouth, ears and paws.

🐕 Great foundation — She walks nicely on leash, settles well in her crate, and knows her basic commands including sit, down, come, place and crate.

At the same time, her trainer recommends a very specific placement to help keep Polly — and everyone around her — safe and successful.

🏡 Polly needs:
• An experienced handler
• An adult-only home — no children
• No frail or elderly individuals in the home
• Ideally, she should be the only dog
• Continued crate and leash management
• A structured home that will maintain clear rules and boundaries

Her trainer noted that Polly can become opportunistic when structure and rules break down, so consistency and management will be important.

Muzzle conditioning has already begun as an additional safety precaution and will need to be continued by her foster or adopter.

The good news? Her trainer said they never felt uncomfortable or concerned with Polly’s behavior while she was under their supervision. The recommendations above are being made out of an abundance of caution and with Polly’s safety and long-term success in mind.

Polly isn’t a dog for just any home — but the right home could make all the difference for her. ❤️

Our sweet Echo is looking for a new foster or forever home, and we’re hoping her perfect person is out there! ❤️🐾

Echo is a 2-year-old, 44-lb bundle of sweetness, silliness, and personality. She’s spayed, up to date on her shots, crate trained, potty trained, and ready for her next chapter.

Echo is equal parts affectionate companion and goofy entertainer. She’ll keep you smiling with her antics — like proudly “borrowing” a sneaker from the front door and carrying it into the living room like she just won a prize! 😂👟

She is currently in a foster home with two older resident dogs. They are kind and tolerant of Echo, but they simply aren’t able to keep up with her youthful energy and playful antics. Echo needs a new foster or forever home where she can continue to thrive.

🐾 Crate trained and sleeps through the night
🐾 Potty trained and signals when she needs to go out
🐾 Finds comfort in her crate for naps and downtime
🐾 Food motivated — making training fun and effective

🚨 INTAKE IS CURRENTLY CLOSED 🚨

We know there are so many dogs and cats in need, and we wish we could say yes to every single one. 💔 Unfortunately, our foster homes, boarding capacity, and financial resources are stretched beyond their limits.

💔 We need help now more than ever!

In the coming days, you’ll see posts about several of our dogs who are losing their foster homes and desperately need new places to go. On top of that, we still have two dogs in boarding, and those costs continue to add up. We cannot keep taking in more animals when we’re struggling to find safe places for the ones already depending on us.

For the safety and well-being of the animals in our care, we are temporarily closed to new intake. This is not a decision we want to make, but it’s one we have to make until we have the space, fosters, and resources to help more animals.

We know how heartbreaking it can be to reach out for help and hear that a rescue cannot take an animal. We feel that heartbreak, too. We wish we could save them all, but we simply cannot do it alone. ❤️

She’ll keep you smiling with her little antics-like proudly ‘borrowing’ a sneaker from the front door & carrying it into the living room like she’s just won a prize (don’t worry she’s more about the fun than the destruction if you catch her in time!).
