One year ago, North Carolina's most devastating hurricane to date severely impacted our communities. Hurricane Helene caused catastrophic flooding and destruction, particularly in the western mountainous regions of the state. The resulting flooding completely destroyed towns, roads, and bridges, causing irreparable damage to parts of the Blue Ridge range. The National Hurricane Center declared the storm the deadliest hurricane in the United States since Katrina struck in August 2005.
Hundreds of thousands were deprived of essential resources, including food, water, supplies, electricity, and every other basic human need, leaving many dangerously isolated. When aid from governmental agencies was far behind and the local first responders did not have the adequate supplies and logistics needed for the level of response to the devastation this catastrophe produced, the aviation community and citizens of North Carolina quickly came together to provide that immediate support. Pilots used their personal aircraft to selflessly transport donations, including food, water, medical supplies, clothing, baby formula, dog food, and many other countless supplies to the most impacted counties when these communities were absolutely cut off from outside relief. Thousands of volunteers dropped everything to aid in the search and rescue and relief supply missions at every operational level. The mission was to ensure everyone received necessary support in a timely manner and to help with those most desperately in need.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with those who continue to rebuild their lives after losing loved ones, homes, and towns. We also extend our gratitude to those who continue to support western North Carolina, acknowledging their unwavering commitment to these communities.
