Piedmont Area Vegan Educators PAVE provides resources and support for living vegan in the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina. PAVE provides resources and support for living vegan.

Mission Statement: The Piedmont Area Vegan Educators (PAVE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, volunteer organization of local vegans. We sponsor and coordinate educational events that foreground issues of ethics, animal emancipation, human health, and the environmental implications of
vegan living. PAVE seeks to inform and demonstrate to the Piedmont Triad community how to live well without animal exploi

tation* while navigating the social dynamics of being vegan in a not yet vegan world. We encourage and coach individuals and groups in informed, accessible and community-based transitions to veganism while emphasizing that a vegan lifestyle is not a sacrifice, but a joy. PAVE outreach includes the entire North Carolina Piedmont Triad Area emphasizing that the transition toward and maintenance of vegan living is accessible to all. In order to bring comprehensive awareness to the ethical, environmental and health significance of veganism, PAVE collaborates with other organizations involved in social justice, health, wellness, and environmentalism. PAVE adheres to The Vegan Society** definition of veganism and advocates for the end of animal exploitation.

Looking for the right way to do something wrong?

Recently, publicity has been given to a Scottish animal exploiter or ‘dairy farmer’ who is seeking taxpayer funding for what the media calls an ‘innovative’ idea to keep infant calves with their mothers for 6 months instead of the more usual maximum of 24 hours. After which they can presumably be sent to slaughter/groomed to replace their mothers as breastmilk dispensers as would have happened in any case.

Of course, looking more closely, this is far from the first time this idea has surfaced from the murky swamp of nonhuman abuse that masquerades as the ‘dairy industry’. Variations on the theme come up every so often as a money-making ploy as can be seen from this post that appeared in my memories today.
https://www.facebook.com/TheresAnElephantInTheRoom/posts/2328495423929525

This 'keeping infants with their mothers' ploy is something of an easy target for the exploitation industry because so many of the adult breastfeeding public, desperate to consider themselves ‘ethical’– and even some uninformed ‘advocates’- latch on to the separation age as if it were the only offensive aspect of the industry, when in fact there is not a single aspect of it that could be considered even marginally decent. From the sexually abused males, the violated mothers and the separated/ slaughtered/ abused infants, every single victim has their every right to live unharmed, violated in the name of cash. It is undoubtedly true that forced separation of mothers and newborns is an atrocity but it has also in fact been scientifically shown that the longer they are together the more traumatic is their separation.

But the aim of a PR campaign of this type is nothing to do with victim wellbeing - if it did, they wouldn't be victims in the first place. It's about consumer confidence because consumer confidence = more profit for exploiters from breastfeeding consumers, and it's been shown to work every time.

Points to note:
1 - Go Vegan World confirmed once and for all in 2017/2018 that there is no such thing as ‘humane milk’ and it could not be legitimately advertised as such. The links to the science that proved their case are on the page below. https://goveganworld.com/landmark-judgement-animal-rights/

2 - And as climate collapse accelerates, a flurry of scientific studies and reports show that the dairy industry is a significant and major contributor to the emissions that are imperilling us all and threatening the end of life as we know it on planet Earth. Quoted from a January 2024 report we see that ‘The UK currently has approximately 12,000 active dairy farms that account for approximately 10% of total UK food manufacturing output. Approximately 50% of the total greenhouse gas emissions by UK agriculture are due to methane produced by dairy farms.’

So yes. By all means let’s use taxpayers’ funding to make matters worse. At least as advocates we must ensure that we never deviate from the crystal clear message that dairy - and all nonvegan practices - are an affront to all decency; wherever, however, and whenever they're inflicted.

For those of you interested in finding healthcare providers who are knowledgeable about plant-based diets, Plant Providers is a Piedmont/Triad organization and a great resource. 80% of members are truly vegan, and the other 20% are not quite there yet but do promote a plant-based diet to their patients. I am vegan speech-language pathologist member of the group. There are nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, dietitians, physical therapists, physicians, gynocologists, etc in the group.

I also want to share the OBGYN practice below because it has 3 vegan gynocologists. Dr. Sidney Callahan is one of the 3 and a member of Plant Providers. She is vegan and an all around awesome person. The other 2 vegans are new to the practice: Gavlinski and Marinone.
