Just a reminder:

It is fawn season, so you may see the sweet little spotted babies as you are out and about. If you see a fawn curled up somewhere by itself, it does not mean that mom abandoned him. The fawns are not supposed to move because that's where their mother told them to stay, so even if you walk up to to the fawn, it probably will not move. Mom "parks" (puts them in one spot and they are not allowed to move) her fawns because fawns have no scent for the first six months of their life, so mom has to leave them as it is too dangerous with predators, so the fawn needs time grow before the baby can run and keep up with her. Unfortunately, even if a car or tractor is coming towards them they will not move either.

Be cognizant that this is fawn season, and it is easy to accidentally "kidnap" a fawn. If you feel you have a fawn in need, feel free to message me, and I will help you out.

A fawn that needs help will either be laying on its side with its legs straight out and lethargic, covered in flies/ticks, or running around for hours crying.

Thanks!!!

I was just asked a great question! When will the boys (squirrels Milo and Otis) be out on their own?

My answer:they will do it themselves when they are ready. I start them in my deer pen, but eventually they climb out and go to the trees above when they are ready and make their own nests. they get to stay in the safety and security of the deer pen until they are ready. I never rush them and let them take their own time. ☺️

Moving day for Milo and Otis! The weather is supposed to be fabulous this week, so it is time to introduce the boys to the great outdoors! They have proven they can make a great leaf nest and store food, so it is time to go.....luckily they are just in my deer pen, so they can learn the lay of the land while still being sheltered ☺️

I get so many calls this time of year for the babies that are in their first year, but have recently lost their spots. They are trying to follow their mamas and wind up getting hit by the cars on the roads. Once a deer gets passed it spots as a fawn, we are told never to interfere with them. At this age they are so strong and deathly afraid of humans that they will attack, stomp, kick, and do anything to get away or to protect others....especially with it being Rutt. I have so many people asking me how to fix legs, and honestly, we can't. The deer will have to be in captivity for 6 weeks or more, lose contact with his/her herd, and most likely wind of dying of capture myopathy or becoming imprinted to the point of not being releasable.

I so wish that I could explain to the m that I am just trying to help them....but they just do not get it. It breaks my heart to see them suffer. If they get to the point where it gets infected and they look visibly miserable and struggling to get up, then it is time to call the game warden to properly euthanize. No sense letting it lay there unable to get up and being prey for something. I am so very sorry. I wish I had better news.......

One thing that you can do is to remember that if you see one deer on the side of the road trying to cross or has already crossed, remember that they travel in herds and where there is one....most likely is more. Slow down and LOOK for those glowing eyes. The young deer get into such a panic to follow mom that they do not know to look for cars too. Help them out by watching for them! Thank you!

RESCUE EXPLAINED......

The neglect changes you.
The abuse hardens you.
The suffering breaks you.
The ignorance angers you.
The indifference disturbs you.
The injustice destroys you.

On a daily basis…your faith will be tested.
Your heart will be wounded....
Your soul will be altered.

On a weekly basis…you’ll question yourself.
You’ll question your strength.
You’ll question the world.

On a monthly basis…you’ll fall down.
You’ll get up.
You’ll go on…

On a yearly basis…you’ll look back…
You’ll see faces…
You couldn’t save them.
You’ll learn to mourn.
To grieve.
To sob.
You’ll learn to trust a little less.
To do a little more.
To fight a little harder.
You’ll learn to try.
To hope.
To pray.
You’ll learn to fail.
To succeed.
To accept.
You’ll learn when to hold on.
When to give up.
When to let go.
You’ll learn who you are.
What you stand for.
Why that matters.

Then… at times… you’ll forget why you matter.
You’ll question what you’re doing.
You’ll wonder if it’s worth it.

But…here’s the good news… When you forget…
When you question…
When you wonder…
All you have to do…
Is take a look around…
And you’ll see them.

You’ll see their faces.
You’ll see their smiles.
You’ll feel their love.

In their eyes, you’ll see their journeys…
You’ll remember their beginnings…
You’ll know how far they’ve come…
You’ll remember when they didn’t know you…
When they didn’t trust you…
When they’d given up.

You’ll remember how you healed them…
How you loved them…
How they loved you, too.
And as you look back…
You’ll want to move forward…
For them… and because of them.

In your darkest hours, you’ll look around…
To find the differences made…the hope given…
and the lives saved…
Because you existed.
In those moments, when you look into their eyes…
Every doubt will be erased.
Every question will be answered.
Every worry will subside.
Because in that instant…in each of your hearts…
You both share the very same thought: “Every bit of pain was worth it…for this moment here with you.”
And honestly…no matter what else happens…
Those moments hold all the strength you need…
To keep going.

Rescue is pain.
Rescue is joy.
Rescue is worth it…because they are worth it.
And that’s the honest truth.

I know it has been a while since i posted. My fawns are all released and i have picked up a job that is keeping me super busy! I am picking up a squirrel today though....so no matter how busy i am, I always try to help if i can.

I was contacted yesterday by a rehabber in another state who needed help with a critter. I told her the meds to use, and to inject, not give orally. She had told me the med was not in original bottle, and thank goodness she told me! Never, ever, inject a med that is not in its own sterile bottle. The possible germ contamination would have killed the baby.

So....if you are injecting your meds, make sure it is in the original bottle! ☺️

I was able to go over and check on the babies the other day, and they are doing fantastic. They are out all day now (hence no pics) and come back at night to eat feed and rest in their enclosure. They are no longer taking bottles anymore and can forage now all day to completely sustain them. I purchase the whitetail results deer feed for them still, just to make sure they are getting enough to eat. They are living on 250 acres with fields of planted clover, corn, as well as 200 acres of forest. There should be no reason why they would be hungry, lol!
