The group spent a lot more time on the Mortain battlefield and some of the major surrounding fights to include Le Neufbourg, St. Barthelemy, and Hill 285. We wrapped the afternoon up with our last baguette sandwich lunch (always a favorite) and stops at the 30th Division headquarters and the rebuilt 35th Infantry Division aid station

Today the group spent a lot of time in and around Mortain. First at the 2/120th command post in the center of town, before gaining the German perspective from the start of the battle. After this we moved to Hill 314 where we walked and talked through several of the 2/120th company positions, spoke about the field artillery and forward observers, and told many stories shared with us by some veterans of the battle to tie it all together. This also included rides in WW2 vehicles on and around the battlefield! The evening took us to Mont St. Michel where we toured the island and had dinner together again!

Yesterday the group toured in and around St. Lo. First stopping at the memorial for MAJ Thomas Howie of the 29th Division. We went to the bombing site where E and F/120 took friendly casualties from the U.S. Army Air Force in July of 1944, and Lieutenant General McNair was killed. Then on to a new stop, the Marigny German Soldiers Cemetery where we were able to see the differences in how our war cemeteries differ but still honor those killed in WW2. From there we had lunch on the way to the Brittany American Cemetery.
Here each person was given the name and location of a 30th Division Soldier and tasked to find them. They then placed a penny on the grave and marked their visit with an American flag, and then gathered and shared what they learned about their Soldier. After this we arrived in Mortain-Bocage where we were warmly welcomed by the Mayor.

Been a busy 2 days in Normandy with stops all up and down the coast. We spent our time on and around the D-Day beaches and then following the 30th’s route to St. Lo where we are staying the night.

Just a few more days and almost 40 members from the association will be touching down in France for a weeklong trip across Normandy and to Mortain. They’ll trace the divisions route from Omaha Beach to Mortain, where the 30th made its stand against the last major German counteroffensive in Normandy and, according to the German Army, sealed their fate in France.

Some attending will be following the path of a father or another loved one. Others are going just for their love of history. Others, current and former 30th Soldiers, are going to immerse themselves in the history of those that came before and are united under the blue and red patch of the 30th Infantry Division.

82 years ago tonight (already taking place France time) the 30th was locked in the start of the last
major counterattack the Germans were able to mass in France. The 30th, having just relieved the 1st Infantry Division in Mortain was expecting a quiet area of the line. The German army changed that and around midnight attacked in and around Mortain with a much more superior force, starting the Battle of Mortain.

This battle would be one for the history and record books. The forces against each other and the fight both sides put up is amazing to hear about and study. It resulted in the Germans pushed out of Normandy and helped seal the liberation of France just 2 weeks after the battle. In March of 2020 the 30th Infantry Division was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for Mortain (and the surrounding area and towns).

Almost 40 members of the association will spend 3 days in and around Mortain in just about 1 month!
