GLOS is led by founder and Artistic Director, David Holley, who is also the Artistic Director of Greensboro Opera, Past President of the National Opera Association and the Director of Opera at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The GLOS faculty has taught and worked at prestigious summer festivals in the US and abroad, including AIMS (Graz), the Schlern International Music Festival, the Ohio Light Opera, and the Brevard Music Center. Both RUDDIGORE and SEUSSICAL will be double-cast, with two fully staged and costumed performances of the former in Greensboro for each cast, after which the company will travel to Roanoke Island Festival Park to present SEUSSICAL

Total cost for the program is $1,551, which encompasses all Greensboro training and performing listed above. In 2022, multi-award-winning baritone and recently Grammy-nominated vocalist, Sidney Outlaw will perform as ๐‰๐š๐ค๐ž in Greensboro Opera's production of ๐‘ท๐’๐’“๐’ˆ๐’š ๐’‚๐’๐’… ๐‘ฉ๐’†๐’”๐’”.

Additionally, Outlaw will perform as Marcello in the Florentine Opera production of La bohรจme, and as Figaro in Pensacola Operaโ€™s Barber of Seville. This Merola Opera program and Juilliard graduate is also in-demand as a recitalist and concert singer.

โ€œIโ€™ve always wanted the three faceted career of recital, concert, and opera, and so Iโ€™m literally, like Alicia Keys โ€” living my dreams,โ€ said Outlaw. โ€œTo be able to take that and bring it back to the classroom, Iโ€™m grateful. And I take everybody that ever helped me along the way, onstage with me every single time I go up there.โ€

Sidney Outlaw isnโ€™t content to stay in his lane. During 2020 he became a bit of a recluse, and his art manifested in other ways: writing (12 journals and counting), reading 29 books, and honing what he described as studying with the focus and concentration of a โ€œJedi musician.โ€ This time of examination and seclusion shaped his interpretation of composer Antonio Salieri โ€” someone people think they know, but perhaps only one-dimensionally โ€” in the upcoming on-demand Opera San Josรฉ production of Mozart and Salieri.

Thanks to a North Carolina Humanities Council Relief Grant,
Greensboro Opera is pleased to bring to you a three-part series entitled:

PORGY and BESS: From Novel to Play to Opera
Presented by Keith Cushman,
Professor Emeritus, UNCG Department of English

February 12 and 26 and March 19, 2021
7:00 pm each evening
Streamed live on Greensboro Opera's page or through the Greensboro Opera website: www.GreensboroOpera.org

#1: February 12 - The Novel Porgy (1925) by DuBose Heyward

This best-seller by a South Carolina writer became the source for the Gershwins' Porgy and Bess. Porgy is notable for its powerful depiction of the Catfish Row community and its introduction of the tragic love story of Porgy and Bess. George Gershwin read the novel and decided that he wanted to make it the basis for an opera.

#2: February 26 - The Play Porgy (1927) by Dubose and Dorothy Heyward

The Heywards adapted Porgy into a stage play. The play, not the novel, provided the basic plot and structure for Porgy and Bess. Porgy ran for 207 performances in New York and then went on an extensive road tour.

#3: March 19 - The Opera Porgy and Bess (1935) with Music by
George Gershwin and Lyrics by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin

Porgy and Bess is universally acclaimed as the great American opera. It is filled with such well known songs as "Summertime," "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin'," and "It Ain't Necessarily So." Over the decades Porgy and Bess has provided classically trained Black singers the opportunity to perform and launch their careers.

The Greensboro and Triad arts and humanities community has been hit hard with the cancellation of live performances and other events. Greensboro Opera hopes to bring our community together in a virtual, immersive experience focusing on the evolution of the Gershwins' beloved Porgy and Bess from novel to play to opera.

Greensboro Opera is presenting this series in celebration of Black History Month and in anticipation of its fully staged production of Porgy and Bess, scheduled to be staged at the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts in Greensboro on January 21 and 23, 2022.
