The Edible Schoolyard Greensboro

The Edible Schoolyard Greensboro The Edible Schoolyard at MBCM empowers kids, families, and adults to cultivate healthier communities

Opened to the public in 2010, The Edible Schoolyard includes a half-acre urban, teaching garden and kitchen classroom. We offer hands-on experiences that focus on fresh, seasonal food, wellness, and outdoor play. Part of the Greensboro Children’s Museum, ESY Greensboro engages our community through field trips, summer camps, after-school programming community events, and cooking classes for kids a

ges 0-100. ESY Greensboro uses a seed-to-table philosophy whereby kids and families learn about the systems through which food is grown, harvested, prepared, and shared as a meal. By giving kids a greater knowledge of and connection to what they eat, we inspire them to make better choices for their health and the health of their communities. The Edible Schoolyard at the Greensboro Children’s Museum is a founding program of the Edible Schoolyard Project, a nonprofit started by food activist and restaurateur Alice Waters. There are seven founding programs working toward a shared mission of food education.

What happens to the food we grow in The Edible Schoolyard? 3 things! We use it in programs and classes. We also put it out on a free farm stand - look to your left when you go from inside the Museum through the main garden doors. And we donate it to local community partners.

Heading to do a garden lesson when it’s raining outside can be disheartening. Learning outdoors is such a crucial part of the experience ….but then you are hit with 18 individual bursts of sunshine ready to learn and play no matter the weather. We found wiggly worms, did a germination review with movement, planted flowers, and had so much fun thanks to our young friends.

Persimmon season has arrived! The variety we grow in the Edible Schoolyard garden is a Fuyu persimmon. Unlike some persimmons (like American and Hachiya) the Fuyu can be eaten before it is fully ripe. Under ripe, it tastes subtly of autumn spices and has a crunch like an apple. The fully ripe fruit is like a lusciously sweet pudding. Two totally different and delicious flavors from one tree!
