DUCK Lab- Development and Understanding of Children's Knowledge at UNCG A non-profit organization dedicated to the study of children’s social and cognitive development.

The DUCK Lab consists of a team of researchers (professors, graduate students, and undergraduate students) who are interested in several aspects of 2- to 10-year-old children’s development, such as:

*How children make social judgments about other people
*Sources of information that children use to learn about the world around them
*The ability to understand and use rules
*Memory development and behavioral control

Our research provides insight about children's skill and strategy development that informs educational curricula and interventions. Participants in our studies are volunteers in the Greensboro community who generously offer their time to help us run our studies. We greatly appreciate the support that we have received from each and every parent and child in the Greensboro community! If you haven't signed up with us already and you are interested in participating, please contact us via phone or e-mail (and direct your query to Ally, our lab manager). Visits can be arranged at your convenience – mornings, afternoons, and weekends. Studies typically take 30 minutes to 1 hour and we provide free and convenient access to parking, as well as refreshments and small prizes for your child. All of our studies are conducted as fun games that children typically enjoy and you are welcome to watch your child participate the entire time. This page will keep parents informed about ongoing research in our center and also provide scientific information and resources on child development.

DUCK Lab fans, We're excited to share new findings from a recently completed study that will be submitted for publication shortly! Julie Peebles, MA student and also a former dancer herself, examined body image in girls who dance ballet competitively and non-competitively. People often think about risk factors associated with participating in ballet when it comes to body image, but the data show a far more nuanced story of all of the benefits that can also come with dance participation depending on the context, as well as things that we can keep an eye on to ensure that our dancing girls are happy and healthy!

DUCK Lab families, Check out this opportunity to help researchers in our department understand technology use in a study on "Tween on Screens." This topic is important and timely, and your experiences and opinions matter!

Details below.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1K7synG3wc/?mibextid=wwXIfr

The Tweens on Screens project, led by researchers at UNC Greensboro, is studying how kids ages 10–12 use technology in daily life, and how parents guide them. By looking closely at these patterns, we hope to uncover what helps kids thrive, what puts them at risk, and how families can build healthy digital habits together. Our goal is simple: to give parents science-backed tools and tips for raising confident, well-balanced kids in the digital age. Learn more and sign up: https://serious-method-313268.framer.app/

Good Morning DUCK Lab Fans!

Check out our latest blog post for Psychology Today. From social media to the New York Times and the Washington Post, there has been a great deal of attention to celebrity bodies, and in particular, speculation about Ariana Grande's weight and health status. It's important to talk about the extreme thin ideal because it is associated with eating disorders, disordered eating, and other physical and mental health issues. But we explain why discussing celebrity bodies is unfruitful and what to do instead to build healthy body image for both women and their daughters.

We can best help girls by modeling lives not centered on celebrity culture.
