The Triad Area NC October 22 Coalition today mourns the loss of our beloved sister, comrade, and fighter, Jessie Barber. Jessie’s son Gilbert A. Barber was unarmed and injured from a single-car accident on May 18, 2001 when he was killed by a Guilty County sheriff’s deputy. From that day forward, Jessie made herself into a fighter for justice for her son, and grew into one of our movement’s most steadfast and loving fighters for all the Stolen Lives. Through her activism with the October 22nd Coalition, she offered her love, support, and insight to other families across the country who bear the same unspeakable and unjustifiable pain and injustice that she bore for so long. She also spoke out consistently and bravely for the rights of all people, Black people, immigrants, LGBTQ people, and against the oppression built into this system.
Today we pledge to honor Jessie’s revolutionary spirit by promising to continue the fight for justice for all Stolen Lives, and for the liberation of all people.
