As winter weather approaches we want to share a few reminders on staying safe, knowing when to contact police during a storm, and how to connect with your Community Resource Officer.
Tips to Stay Safe in Snowy Weather
After the big snowstorm and with more snow on the way, it is a good time to check in and make sure we’re all staying safe. From shoveling and driving to keeping your home warm, a few simple precautions can go a long way. Take a look at these tips to help yourself, your family, and your neighbors stay safe and cozy during the winter weather.
1. Personal Safety
Take it slow with shoveling - Lift smaller amounts of snow and take breaks to avoid overexertion.
Watch for ice - Wear boots with good traction and walk carefully.
Dress in layers - Keep hats, gloves, and scarves handy.
Stay hydrated & eat well - Your body burns extra energy to stay warm.
2. On the Roads
Stay off the roads if you can - Plows may not have cleared everything yet.
Drive cautiously - Slow down, keep distance, and avoid sudden stops.
Emergency car kit - Keep blankets, water, snacks, flashlight, shovel, and ice scraper in your vehicle.
Clear snow from your car - Don’t forget the roof and lights!
3. At Home
Check heating systems - Use space heaters carefully and keep them away from anything that could catch fire.
Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors-They’re especially important during winter months.
Check on neighbors - Older neighbors may need help clearing snow or getting supplies.
Keep pets safe - Limit outdoor time and provide warm shelter.
4. Emergency Preparedness
Stock essentials - Water, non-perishable good, medications, batteries, and flashlights.
Plan for power outages - Know backup heating options and keep phones charged.
Monitor weather updates - Stay alert for closures or warnings.
Pre-treat driveways and walkways - A little salt will make snow removal much easier.
