General update on kittens and the craziness that is .
First off, thank you to whoever sent the case of kitten food and the litter, as well as the people who have donated gift cards through Chewy and their program. We go through around 12-15 cans of kitten food per day usually, so any help we can get there is greatly appreciated and helps us to keep money in the bank for medical expenses. I would also like to thank the people who donated when I posted about Betty’s emergency vet visit!
Betty is doing well. Her foster-to-adopter has not seen any 🩸 in the litter box since yesterday, so that’s great news!
However, since Betty was asymptomatic for coccidia, we didn’t know she had it until the f***l was done. She mostly used the litter boxes in the front of the house, which are next to the play yard for Pebble, London, Midnight, Karma, and Sparks. 3 of those kittens had f***ls done while she was still here and tested negative. Even her brother tested negative. It’s crazy how these things can hide.
The past 36-48 hours has been insanity. It’s been a constant battle of cleaning 💩 off the floor and play yard wall, off the kittens, changing the bedding, changing the litter boxes just for them to 💩 in them immediately after and I have to do it again… angry bellies, hangry kittens because everything was just going straight through them. It’s been like a poop-pocalypse 🫣 I picked up some probiotics and decided to do a 24 hour belly reset with KRM (kitten milk replacement) for the kitties who would drink it and a wet food that is easier to digest for the ones who won’t.
I don’t know if it’s the probiotics, belly reset diet, or both. But this morning has been a breath of fresh air (literally less stinky). There is so much less poo and they are playing, relaxed and not screaming for food because they are actually retaining what they are eating.
Right now I am treating all the kittens in the play yards even the ones separated, including the new 3 and Archer.
Unfortunately, I had to cancel our adoption event this weekend since I don’t want to potentially expose anyone there.
Romeo has had to be separated from Paris and December. Unfortunately, I discovered that Paris was nursing on his elbow (😳????) to the point that the fur came off and I found him nursing on her bum. 🤦🏻♀️ They are allowed to have supervised playtime, but Romeo now has his own room next to Archer. Paris and December can stay together because they seem to only play with each other and not nurse on each other.
***adding after typing most of this post out. I had a moment to bathe Romeo some now that he’s put on some weight, and found some weird brown stuff on the follicles of the hair surrounding the elbow that was being nursed on. It’s definitely not flea dirt, I’ve never seen anything like it before and our vet is closed on Wednesdays. I don’t think it constitutes an emergency because it doesn’t seem to bother him and it’s not all over him, but the arm, elbow, and shoulder area. I’ll obviously call about it in the morning and send a picture, but playtime with sisters is cut until I know what it is.***
As soon as we are past the treatment for the coccidia, I can let Archer start playing with the Romeo litter (still supervised, I don’t trust the nursers). The kittens in the big play yard can be integrated into the household and the others can be moved to the big play yard.
It’s been a lot y’all. Please bear with me if I am slow to respond to msgs and emails (this goes for people on the personal side as well as professional). I’m putting out the most important fires first. Just for reference, I started this post at 11am. It is now, *looks at watch* …. after 4pm. (It’s gotten funnier the later it’s gotten as I’ve had to change it😅)
I go back and forth sometimes on whether or not to post the not so cute sides of rescue, but at the end of the day, I think it’s important for the community to see what’s real and what happens. We’re overcrowded, and this is the reality of that. I wish kitten season was all purrs and biscuits, but a lot of times it’s not.
We’ll get back to the cute soon, and here’s some cute for you now. Thanks again for supporting this tiny rescue and the mission to save orphaned kittens. I appreciate you all more than you know!
