Mobilizing colleges and universities to host refugees and support them in their resettlement. Other colleges and universities have joined the movement.

Millions of refugees are escaping violence in search of a safe haven. Inspired by the Pope's call on every parish to host one refugee family, Guilford College founded Every Campus A Refuge movement, an initiative which calls on every college and university campus around the world to host one refugee family on their campus grounds and to assist them in resettlement. Guilford College is marshaling its campus resources to do just that. We have hosted 66 refugees thus far and about to host an 18 Afghan evacuees! Will your campus, be the next refuge? We were honored to be part of “Leadership Through Changemaking: Building Resilient Ecosystems,” part of the Sustainability Lunch Series hosted by the Sustainability Initiative at MIT.

The conversation featured Eidi Cruz-Valdivieso, Director of Ashoka U, and Dr. Diya Abdo, founder of Every Campus A Refuge (ECAR), exploring changemaking, social entrepreneurship, and the importance of building resilient, inclusive communities.

Dr. Abdo shared the vision behind ECAR and its work supporting refugee families through campus-based resettlement and community integration. With more than 1,000 refugees hosted across ECAR campuses nationwide, this work demonstrates how higher education institutions can serve as powerful partners in creating meaningful, lasting change.

We are grateful to the MIT Sustainability Initiative for bringing together leaders committed to building a more inclusive world and advancing the Everyone a Changemaker movement!

Big news for ECAR at Guilford College! 💙

The Cone Health Foundation has awarded ECAR a $22,000 Social Determinants of Health grant to support Guilford’s Westside after-school program throughout 2027! 🎉

Through tutoring, homework help, English language practice, mentorship, and social enrichment, this program helps refugee and immigrant children build confidence, strengthen their skills, and find a sense of belonging in their community. 📚🤝

A year after meeting at the 2025 ECAR Gathering at Lafayette College, Sara Alkelani and Dr. Jennifer Fish reunited in Casablanca, Morocco. Jennifer leads ECAR at Old Dominion University and has spent decades researching migration, women’s labor, and human rights. Sara was a part of the student group that helped to establish Clemson University’s ECAR chapter and is now living in Casablanca and teaching English on a Fulbright Grant.

Sara first met Jennifer at her photography workshop at the Lafayette Gathering. A year later, Jennifer was traveling through Morocco with her best friends from her own exchange experience, giving them the chance to reconnect in Sara’s new home. A pretty special reminder that the ECAR community stretches far beyond our campuses!

As one Gathering evaluation respondent shared, it’s “a place to find respite from messaging of exclusion and hate and to recharge one’s motivation for the necessary work of welcoming and protecting community.”

Reasons to NOT attend an ECAR Gathering… 👀

You don’t want to meet new people.
You don’t want to have meaningful conversations.
You definitely don’t want to learn from people with different experiences.
You don’t want to be part of something bigger than yourself.
And, of course, you really don’t want to make new memories. 😉

Sounds like you should probably come to the next ECAR Gathering. 💙🌎
